To make website thumbnails look consistent, give them a shared aspect ratio and choose whether images should fill the frame or remain fully visible. Use a crop-and-cover approach for uniform filled tiles; use contain or proportional scaling when showing the entire image matters. Do not stretch different images to arbitrary identical dimensions: that distorts them.
Choose a thumbnail fit that matches the content
Start by deciding what consistency means for your page: matching outer frames, or showing every part of every image. A fixed frame ratio controls the shape; the fit or crop policy determines what remains visible.
| Approach | What viewers see | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover or hard crop | A filled frame with a consistent shape | Image edges may be cut off | Grids, cards, and listings where uniform tiles matter most |
| Contain or proportional fit | The whole image, without distortion | Empty space may appear inside the frame | Product images, diagrams, or images whose edges carry important information |
| Dedicated generated size | A reusable image variant sized for a recurring component | A hard crop can hide content; a proportional resize may not fill an exact rectangle | WordPress sites that repeatedly use the same thumbnail component |
WordPress describes Cover as filling an area with possible cropping and Contain as showing the full image, potentially with empty space. Its editor also offers a focal-point control to reposition the visible subject under Cover. WordPress Image block documentation
Make a consistent thumbnail frame with CSS
For a site where you control the markup and styles, use a shared aspect ratio on the thumbnail container and make the image cover it. The example below produces a 3:2 frame; change that ratio to suit the design.

.thumbnail img {

The fixed ratio defines the box. Cover fills it and may crop the source image. Adjust the focal position for images where the subject is off-center; for example, a top-oriented crop can use object-position: center top. Check representative images at the actual card size so faces, labels, and other important details are not clipped.
When the full image must remain visible
Use proportional sizing rather than a crop. In a fixed frame, object-fit: contain keeps the full image visible, but may leave unused space where the image ratio differs from the frame. If you allow the image itself to determine its displayed height, set width: 100%; height: auto;; that preserves proportions but will not make all thumbnail rows the same height.

Set thumbnail behavior in the WordPress editor
In the block editor, select the Image block and set its aspect ratio and scaling behavior in the block settings. Choose Cover when the image should fill the frame, then adjust the focal point so the subject stays visible. Choose Contain when cropping is unacceptable and blank space is acceptable. The aspect ratio setting changes the presentation; it does not necessarily change the uploaded source file. WordPress Image block documentation
WordPress’s Edit Media documentation gives 150 × 150 pixels with square cropping as the default thumbnail size and notes that it can be adjusted in Media settings. That is a WordPress default, not a recommended universal size for every website. WordPress Media Library documentation

Generate a reusable WordPress image size
If a theme uses the same thumbnail component repeatedly, register a named image size so WordPress can create a variant for it. Add the registration to the theme or a site-specific plugin, then request the named size where the thumbnail is rendered.
// In your theme's functions.php or a site-specific plugin:
add_action( 'after_setup_theme', function () {
add_image_size( 'article-card', 640, 426, true );
} );
// In a theme template:
the_post_thumbnail( 'article-card' );
With the fourth argument set to true, WordPress hard-crops to the requested dimensions. The developer reference also supports a crop-position array, such as array( 'left', 'top' ), when that crop location is preferable to the default center. Leaving the crop argument false uses proportional resizing instead; that avoids cutting off the image but does not guarantee a filled exact rectangle. WordPress add_image_size() reference

After changing a registered size
Registering a new size does not itself resize image files already in the media library. Existing uploads may need thumbnail regeneration before the new variant is available. Plan for that step when deploying a theme change; otherwise older images may not have the newly requested size. WordPress add_image_size() reference

Balance sharpness, responsiveness, and file size
A consistent display box does not require every original upload to have identical pixel dimensions. The frame ratio sets the visual shape, the crop and focal point control visible content, source resolution affects sharpness, and responsive image selection affects the amount of image data sent to a browser.
WordPress responsive-image support can let a browser select a more suitable source size instead of downloading the full-size original in every context. Choose output dimensions for the component and viewing conditions: a thumbnail should be sharp enough where it appears without needlessly serving a much larger source. WordPress responsive images documentation and WordPress image optimization guidance
Troubleshoot uneven or awkward thumbnails
- Tiles have different visible heights: apply the same frame ratio to every tile, rather than relying on each source image’s natural dimensions.
- Subjects are clipped: keep the shared frame but adjust the crop or focal point for those images. If cropping is not acceptable, switch to Contain or proportional fit.
- Blank bars or gaps appear: this is expected when preserving the whole image inside a differently shaped frame. Use Cover only if losing edge content is acceptable.
- New WordPress crops do not appear on older uploads: the size registration does not resize existing media; regenerate the needed thumbnails.
- Images look soft: check whether the generated source has adequate resolution for its displayed size and whether the browser is receiving an appropriate responsive variant.
- Pages send unnecessarily large images: use responsive image support and select sizes for the display context instead of serving full-size originals by default.
