ArchiveBox’s standard headless Chrome screenshot is documented as a viewport capture, not a guaranteed capture of the page’s full document height. Increasing RESOLUTION changes the screenshot/PDF viewport dimensions; it does not turn the built-in extractor into a full-page capture. For a documented full-page screenshot, use the ArchiveBox browser extension, which can save a PNG locally in the browser extension’s storage.
Why ArchiveBox captures only the top of a long page
The built-in Chrome screenshot uses a configured viewport. ArchiveBox documents RESOLUTION as its default screenshot/PDF viewport size, and SCREENSHOT_RESOLUTION as a screenshot-specific override. These settings control the viewport dimensions; the documentation does not describe them as a setting that captures the entire document height. See the ArchiveBox configuration reference.
Similarly, TIMEOUT controls the maximum runtime allowed for an extractor and Snapshot. Raising it may help a slow run finish, but it does not change the capture area. The official configuration material reviewed does not establish a universal native full-height setting or guarantee capture of lazy-loaded or infinite-scroll content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the ArchiveBox browser extension for a full-page PNG
The ArchiveBox browser extension documents full-page screenshot capture and PNG export. This is a browser-driven workflow, rather than a change to the server-side headless screenshot extractor.

- Connect the extension to your ArchiveBox server. Make the server accessible from the browser where the extension is installed, then set the server URL and authentication/API key as appropriate for the extension version and your configuration.
- Open the page to capture. Navigate to the long web page in that browser.
- Save it with the extension. Use the extension icon or the “Save to ArchiveBox” context-menu action.
- Find and export the screenshot. Check the extension’s Saved URLs or local capture view. When local capture saving is enabled, the README documents the PNG artifact at
snapshots/YYYYMMDD/example.com/{uuid}/chrome_extension_screenshot/screenshot.pngin extension-local OPFS storage. Use the extension’s Export menu to export it as PNG. See the ArchiveBox browser extension README. - Confirm where the artifact ended up. If you need the image in a server-side ArchiveBox collection, verify that it was transferred or exported there. The extension documentation describes local storage and export; it does not establish that this screenshot is automatically transferred into the server-side Snapshot directory.
Configure the built-in screenshot extractor when a viewport capture is enough
If a viewport screenshot is suitable, set the effective resolution at the scope used by your run. ArchiveBox documents configuration through archivebox config --set, the collection’s ArchiveBox.conf, or environment variables. The screenshot-specific override is SCREENSHOT_RESOLUTION; RESOLUTION is the default for screenshots and PDFs.
Existing Crawl configuration can take precedence over later environment defaults. Check the value effective for the Crawl, Snapshot, or Persona handling your capture rather than assuming a newly set environment variable has replaced an existing setting. Consult the configuration reference for the available settings and scope.

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
Increasing the viewport may show more of a page in the screenshot, but it is not a documented substitute for capturing the full document. Increasing TIMEOUT may give a slow extractor more time, but likewise does not extend the screenshot height.
Extension and page caveats
- Browser support: The extension README says MHTML capture uses Chromium’s
pageCapture.saveAsMHTML()API and is available in Chrome, Edge, and Chromium builds. Firefox and Safari builds skip MHTML because that API is unavailable there. This MHTML limitation should not be treated as proof that screenshot behavior is identical in every browser; confirm the behavior in the extension build you use. - Lazy-loaded content: The inspected official documentation does not guarantee that native headless capture loads content below the fold before taking a screenshot.
- Infinite scrolling and very tall pages: The documentation does not settle how these cases behave in native capture. Test the specific page and extension/browser combination if completeness matters.
- Historical issue: A 2018 issue about autoscrolling and full-height screenshots is closed and labeled done, but its visible description does not explain a current native configuration. It is not a reliable guide to a present-day setting: ArchiveBox issue #305.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without setting up ArchiveBox’s browser extension, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one API request. Its cleanup steps accept cookie/consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents.

Common problems and what to check
- The server-side screenshot still shows only the top of the page: That is consistent with the documented viewport capture. Use the extension’s full-page screenshot workflow instead of expecting a larger
RESOLUTIONto guarantee full document height. - The extension cannot reach ArchiveBox: Check that the server URL is reachable from the browser running the extension, and that its configured authentication/API key matches the server setup.
- The expected screenshot is missing from the server archive: Check the extension’s local Saved URLs/capture view and export options. A locally stored OPFS artifact should not be assumed to have been copied into a server-side Snapshot.
- The capture is slow or times out: Review the effective timeout for the extractor and Snapshot. A higher timeout may help a slow run complete, but it will not make the capture full-page.
- Lower-page content is missing: The official material does not guarantee lazy-loaded or infinite-scroll content in native headless screenshots. Check the specific page with the browser extension and verify the exported image.
