Turn on Cross-device services on both devices to use Google’s Instant Hotspot feature. It can make connecting a supported Android device to your phone’s internet easier, but it is not guaranteed to work with every phone, tablet, or computer—and it is not a complete Android equivalent to Apple’s continuity features.
Which Android setting makes hotspot connections smoother?
The setting is Use cross-device services, in Google settings. Google says both devices need cross-device services enabled for Instant Hotspot and automatic Wi-Fi sharing. The feature is intended to simplify connecting supported devices; it does not replace a standard Wi-Fi hotspot or guarantee the same experience across every Android device.
How to turn on Instant Hotspot
-
On each device, open Google settings and go to All services → Devices & sharing → Cross-device services. Turn on Use cross-device services. Google’s Android instructions note that menu labels can vary.
-
Make sure both devices are associated with at least one common Google Account. Google’s cross-device services overview describes shared-account use across participating devices.

Instant Hotspot or a regular Wi-Fi hotspot?
| Approach | What it does | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Instant Hotspot | Uses Google cross-device services to make connecting between supported devices more convenient. | You regularly connect a compatible device associated with the same Google Account and want a simpler device-to-device flow. |
| Regular Wi-Fi hotspot | Uses the phone’s hotspot settings; the receiving device joins the hotspot through its Wi-Fi options. | Instant Hotspot is unavailable, or you want to connect a device that can join a conventional Wi-Fi network. |
Google documents Wi-Fi, USB, and Bluetooth tethering as options, but they are not interchangeable experiences. See Android hotspot and tethering help for the available methods.
