If an older Samsung Galaxy tablet feels slow, start with low-risk fixes: check storage and memory in Device Care, close apps you are not using, restart the tablet, and install any available software update. If the slowdown began after adding an app, investigate that app and test the tablet in Safe mode. These steps can help identify common causes, but they cannot guarantee a particular speed increase; settings and menu names vary by model, software version, and carrier.
1. Check storage and memory in Device Care
Samsung lists full storage and apps running in the background among common causes of slow performance. On the tablet, open Settings and look for Device care or Battery and device care. The exact name and available options depend on the model and software version.
- Open Storage to review large files and apps you no longer use. Delete only content you are sure you do not need.
- Open Memory to see whether apps are using memory in the background. Close apps you are not currently using, or use the cleanup option if one is available.
Device Care can report storage and RAM usage and offer optimization options, but available tools differ between tablets. Samsung does not specify a universal amount of free space that will make every device faster.
2. Restart, then check for updates
A restart can clear temporary background processes. After restarting, check whether Samsung offers a software update for your tablet. Updates can improve performance, stability, and compatibility, but an older model may no longer have an update available.

- Restart the tablet using its power menu.
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install, if that option appears, and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Check whether an app is causing the slowdown
If the tablet became slow after you installed an app, start by reviewing recently installed or suspicious apps. Uninstall an app you do not trust. If one particular app is misbehaving, clear its cache before considering more disruptive steps.
Clear an app’s cache before its data
Open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, then look under Storage for Clear cache. Menu labels can vary. Clearing cache removes temporary files; it is different from Clear data, which resets the app and removes its saved app data and settings. Check that you can recover anything important before clearing data.

Use Safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the tablet works normally in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be contributing to the problem. Restart the tablet to leave Safe mode, then remove or investigate recently added apps one at a time. Samsung’s instructions for entering Safe mode vary by device, so use the steps for your exact model.

4. Treat microSD as file storage, not a speed upgrade
Some Galaxy tablets support microSD cards and some do not. Check the specifications for your exact model—including its supported card capacity—before buying one. A compatible card can add room for files and may allow some apps to be moved, but it does not upgrade the tablet’s RAM or processor. Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, so a microSD card should not be treated as an internal-storage or general performance upgrade.

5. Run diagnostics and decide when to seek service
If the slowdown persists, run diagnostics in the Samsung Members app if it is available on your tablet. If the tablet remains slow in Safe mode, Samsung says hardware may be involved and recommends seeking service. Persistent trouble can also warrant checking the exact model’s software support and the cost of repair against replacement; there is no single answer for every older tablet.

A factory reset erases personal data, so use it only after the less disruptive checks above and after backing up anything you want to keep. Before resetting, decrypt an encrypted microSD card; otherwise, the tablet may no longer be able to read it. A reset is not a guaranteed fix for hardware problems or every cause of slow performance.
