First check whether FFmpeg needs to encode your video at all. If the input’s video and audio already suit your YouTube stream and you do not need filters or format conversion, use stream copy (-c:v copy -c:a copy) to avoid decoding and re-encoding. If encoding is necessary, try a faster software preset, reduce resolution or frame rate only if the result is acceptable, and consider compatible hardware encoding last. Which option works depends on your files, output requirements, FFmpeg build, and computer.
1. Check whether you can avoid encoding
Looping a file does not itself require re-encoding. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely; stream copy moves packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. It is fast and does not reduce quality, but it cannot apply filters and is not supported by every input/output combination. See the FFmpeg documentation.
If the codecs and format are suitable for your YouTube ingest, try this illustrative command shape. Confirm the stream mapping and compatibility for your file, and replace the destination with your actual RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and stream key without exposing the key publicly:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL"
This example selects the first video and first audio stream; files without audio, or with different stream layouts, need different mapping. If a filter such as scaling, overlays, frame-rate conversion, or color conversion is required for video, that video must be decoded and encoded. You can still copy a stream that needs no conversion: for example, encode audio while copying compatible video, or encode video while copying compatible audio.

2. If encoding is necessary, make the software encoder favor speed
For software H.264 encoding, a faster libx264 preset is a practical next test. Faster presets trade compression efficiency—and potentially quality at a given bitrate—for encoding speed. The best choice depends on the machine and material; do not assume a preset produces a particular CPU saving.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-c:a copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL"
veryfast is an example, not a universal recommendation. Test a faster supported preset if CPU remains high, then inspect the picture for artifacts and check whether the encoder keeps up. FFmpeg also documents encoder tuning and the rc-lookahead option, but these alter encoder behavior and are not guaranteed CPU fixes. Do not add -tune zerolatency automatically to a prerecorded loop; use a tune only when its purpose fits the stream.

3. Reduce output workload only if viewers can accept it
Lowering output resolution or frame rate means processing fewer or smaller frames and may reduce work. This is a workload-based option, not a measured promise: choose the output that preserves the detail and motion your viewers need. If you repeatedly scale the same source, preparing a correctly sized, pre-encoded file can avoid doing that conversion during every live run.
Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance, which varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube Help’s H.264 guidance lists these recommended ingest bitrates (page publication date not shown; accessed in 2026):

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not FFmpeg CPU targets. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the selected codec and output mode.
4. Consider hardware encoding if re-encoding is still too demanding
A compatible hardware encoder may move video encoding work off the CPU. FFmpeg documents hardware-accelerated encoding paths, but support depends on the actual hardware, driver, operating system, codec, and FFmpeg build. Check which encoder is available in your installed build and verify platform support before changing the command. Hardware encoding is not automatically compatible or faster for every setup, and the documentation does not establish a CPU saving for your machine.

5. Keep YouTube ingest settings valid and test the full loop
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoders. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The correct bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s encoder settings page rather than lowering bitrate solely to chase a CPU reduction.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” YouTube also says it automatically detects the encoder settings chosen and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

Test a representative part of the loop, including its motion and audio, before relying on it. Compare CPU load, visible quality, dropped frames or encoding lag, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. No universal CPU percentage reduction can be promised for stream copy, a preset change, lower output dimensions, or hardware encoding.
6. Troubleshoot common outcomes
- Stream copy fails or YouTube rejects the stream: the source codec, container, timestamps, or stream layout may not suit the destination. Check FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s ingest requirements; encode only the incompatible stream if possible.
- CPU stays high with
-c:v copy: confirm the command actually selects stream copy for video and that no filter or conversion is forcing a transcode. Check the FFmpeg output for the selected video codec and any filter graph. - CPU is high with
libx264: try a faster supported preset, then consider an acceptable lower resolution or frame rate. Recheck quality and whether encoding lag disappears. - Hardware encoder is unavailable: confirm the FFmpeg build exposes the encoder and that the required driver and platform support are installed. A hardware name in an example does not prove it is enabled in your build.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: review its message and test with the recommended ingest settings, including CBR and keyframe interval, while monitoring the same representative material.
Or let it run in the cloud
