To make FFmpeg retry a YouTube Live output after a temporary network failure, send the output through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer and enable its recovery options. This can keep FFmpeg processing while it retries the output; it does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and it does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event.

What FIFO recovery handles—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can continue processing in real time during a temporary output failure and attempt to recover the stream. The official example retries every second indefinitely. That is a retry pattern, not a guarantee of gapless playback, successful reconnection in every network condition, or YouTube event resumption.

There are three separate failure cases to plan for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Temporary output interruption while FFmpeg stays alive: FIFO recovery can retry the output.
  • FFmpeg exits or crashes: FIFO does not establish that the process will restart; process supervision is a separate layer.
  • A publisher reconnects after a process restart: Whether YouTube accepts it into the same live event must be verified separately.

See the FFmpeg muxer documentation for the FIFO options and example.

Set YouTube’s 4K 60fps encoder parameters

The consulted YouTube live encoder guidance recommends these settings for H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps:

Setting Guidance
Video bitrate 35 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 4K/2160p, 60 fps (YouTube Help guidance consulted in 2026).
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended. Google also documents RTMPS ingestion.

The consulted YouTube guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with codec caveats for HDR. Check the current YouTube documentation and Live Control Room for the codec, SDR/HDR mode, and stream-key settings you intend to use. The command pattern below uses H.264 and AAC, but those are not necessarily right for every source or workflow.

Configure FIFO recovery in FFmpeg

  1. Prepare the normal input and encoding settings. Your existing FFmpeg input and encoder options should produce 3840×2160 video at 60 fps, with the bitrate, CBR behavior, and two-second keyframe interval set appropriately for your encoder. Keep the options suited to your actual source.
  2. Wrap the output in FIFO. Set the output format to FIFO and its underlying format to FLV using -f fifo -fifo_format flv.
  3. Enable recovery. Add -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. The one-second wait follows FFmpeg’s documented example; that example says it attempts recovery every second indefinitely.
  4. Choose overflow behavior deliberately. The documented pattern includes -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. It allows queued packets to be dropped when the FIFO overflows, which may affect continuity. Validate whether that trade-off is acceptable for your stream.
  5. Map the intended streams and publish to YouTube. Use the current RTMPS ingestion destination and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. FFmpeg’s stream maps must match the streams in your input.

The official example’s structure is:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a RTMPS_DESTINATION

This is a documentation-derived pattern, not a tested production command. Replace INPUT and RTMPS_DESTINATION with values for your workflow, and adapt the maps and encoding options to the actual input and desired stream. The example does not include a complete, universal set of 4K encoder flags.

Test recovery and plan for a stopped process

  1. Run a controlled live session and confirm the picture, resolution, frame rate, and audio in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Observe FFmpeg’s logs during a controlled temporary output interruption. Confirm that FFmpeg remains alive and attempts recovery; do not assume that viewers will see uninterrupted video.
  3. Test a separate case in which the FFmpeg process exits. FIFO’s documented temporary-output recovery does not cover restarting a terminated process. If you add a process supervisor, configure and test that independently.
  4. After a process restart, verify whether the publisher can rejoin the intended YouTube live event. The cited FIFO documentation does not settle YouTube’s event behavior.

Troubleshoot common disconnects

  • FFmpeg keeps running but output does not return: Check the FFmpeg logs, network connectivity, RTMPS destination, and stream key. Confirm FIFO recovery options are applied to the output, then test again under the actual network conditions.
  • FFmpeg has exited: FIFO recovery cannot restart a process that is no longer running. Use a separately configured process supervisor if automatic process restart is required, and verify YouTube event behavior after restart.
  • Playback has gaps or packets are dropped: Recovery is not documented as gapless. If using -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, assess whether packet dropping under overflow is acceptable and test the resulting continuity and latency.
  • YouTube does not accept the resumed publisher: A successful FFmpeg retry does not prove the live event will resume. Check the event and ingestion state in Live Control Room and test reconnection behavior independently.
  • The stream does not meet the 4K 60fps target: Check the source, encoder output, and YouTube’s current settings. The consulted H.264 recommendation is 35 Mbps, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; verify the applicable codec and HDR requirements for your stream.
