To build an Ethereum dApp, create a smart contract for its on-chain logic, build a frontend that calls that contract, connect a wallet, and test the complete flow locally and on a public test network such as Sepolia. The contract and interface are separate parts: each has its own development, deployment, and maintenance needs.

What you are building

Ethereum.org defines a dApp as “an application built on a decentralized network that combines a smart contract and a frontend user interface.” Its backend logic runs on a peer-to-peer network; the frontend is the interface people use to read data or request contract actions. The frontend can be hosted separately, including on decentralized storage such as IPFS. Ethereum.org’s technical introduction to dApps was last updated July 13, 2026.

Think of the contract as the part that enforces shared rules and stores on-chain state, and the frontend as the part that presents those rules and lets users interact with them. A working interface does not by itself make a contract secure, and deploying a contract does not automatically provide a usable interface.

Choose a small use case and learn the essentials

Start with a bounded feature rather than a broad product idea. Write down what state the contract must store and which actions users should be able to take. This keeps the first contract small enough to reason about and test.

Before wiring transactions into a user interface, understand Ethereum accounts and transactions as well as smart contracts. The Ethereum developer documentation organizes its introductory material around the Ethereum stack, accounts, transactions, contracts, programming languages, and client APIs; it was last updated April 22, 2026.

Pick a contract-development workflow

Write the contract in Solidity and use a development framework to compile and test it. Ethereum.org documents both Hardhat and Foundry. Choose based on the workflow you want, not an assumed universal winner: the cited material does not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison.

Hardhat An environment for building and deploying Ethereum software. A JavaScript-oriented project workflow, including the documented Solidity, Hardhat, React, and MetaMask beginner walkthrough.
Foundry A portable Rust toolchain for compiling Solidity, managing dependencies, running unit and fuzz tests, deploying contracts, and scripting chain interactions. A command-line workflow where those testing and scripting capabilities suit the project.

These descriptions come from Ethereum.org’s framework documentation. They do not establish comparative ease or performance.

Build and test the contract before the interface

  1. Define contract state and actions. Decide what information belongs on-chain and what each supported action is allowed to change.
  2. Implement the Solidity contract. Keep the initial scope narrow enough that you can inspect each state-changing function and its expected behavior.
  3. Compile and test locally. Configure Hardhat or Foundry for a local development environment, then check both expected outcomes and invalid or unexpected inputs. Foundry documents unit and fuzz testing among its capabilities.
  4. Deploy to a public test network. Once local behavior is understood, use a test network such as Sepolia to check the deployment and transaction flow against a public Ethereum environment.

Ethereum.org’s tutorial materials include a full-stack beginner example deployed to Sepolia. A testnet deployment is for practice and validation; it is not a security audit or evidence that a contract is ready to handle real user funds.

Build the frontend and connect a wallet

The frontend needs to let a user connect a wallet, read contract state, request a transaction, and see relevant results. Ethereum.org’s frontend tutorial demonstrates React, TypeScript, Vite, and Wagmi for those interactions. Its tools directory describes Wagmi as React hooks built on Viem. A separate full-stack walkthrough uses React and MetaMask. These are documented paths, not required dependencies.

  1. Choose a frontend stack. For a React app, the current Ethereum.org tutorial path uses TypeScript, Vite, and Wagmi; the beginner full-stack path demonstrates React and MetaMask.
  2. Configure the wallet connection. Let the user connect a wallet and make the app’s selected network clear before enabling contract actions.
  3. Read contract data. Use the contract address and ABI (the interface description used by client code) to request the state the UI needs.
  4. Send transactions deliberately. Distinguish a read from a state-changing transaction so users can review and approve the wallet request.
  5. Handle results and events. Show whether a transaction is pending or complete and refresh the relevant UI when contract state changes.

Ethereum.org’s frontend tutorial and tool directory cover these frontend building blocks. A starter such as Scaffold-ETH 2 is another documented option: the tools directory describes it as a Next.js starter using Wagmi, Viem, RainbowKit, and a choice of Hardhat or Foundry.

Run the complete app on Sepolia

After local testing, deploy the contract to Sepolia and point the frontend at the test deployment. The official full-stack tutorial demonstrates a Solidity, Hardhat, React, and MetaMask workflow, using Alchemy in its Sepolia setup. A network provider is needed when your app or development tools interact with a public network; local development remains the place to begin before that step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the wallet, frontend, and deployed contract all target the same network. For the test deployment, keep a record of the network, contract address, ABI or generated client information, and frontend network configuration. This makes it possible to tell which contract instance the UI is calling and to reproduce the setup.

What remains before a production launch

The cited beginner walkthroughs establish an example build and test path, not a complete production architecture or security process. A successful Sepolia run proves that the pieces can work together in that test setup; it does not establish that a contract is safe for real users. Treat production deployment as a separate decision, with security review and operational planning appropriate to the app’s risks.

Package versions, test-network settings, and hosted RPC terms can change. The Ethereum.org documentation pages cited above were updated in 2026, but check the current tutorial instructions and service terms when configuring a real project.
