You can make an animated Product Hunt thumbnail by turning an existing Lottie animation into a GIF in Canva, or by building a frame-based animation in a Canva video design and downloading it as a GIF. Product Hunt recommends a square 240 × 240-pixel thumbnail, and its current guidance says GIFs must be under 3 MB. Animation is optional: make the first frame clear on its own, since the GIF animates only when someone hovers over the post.
Check Product Hunt’s thumbnail guidance first
Product Hunt’s Help Center recommends a square thumbnail at 240 × 240 pixels. GIF files must be under 3 MB. GIFs animate only while a visitor hovers over a post, so the opening frame should communicate what the product is even when the image is still. Avoid strobing effects, quick cuts, and text that is too small to read; Product Hunt says it may edit unsuitable GIFs. See Product Hunt’s posting instructions for its current guidance.
The 2022 Product Hunt article described a 2 MB limit. That figure is outdated: use the current Help Center’s under-3-MB limit instead. Compress your export only if it exceeds that limit.

These are the two approaches described by Serhad iletir in a Product Hunt article published March 9, 2022. They are workflows from that author, not independently tested procedures. Canva’s help describes turning a still image into a short animated video for product visuals, but does not confirm every interface step, export option, or plan availability described below.

Method 1: Turn a Lottie animation into a thumbnail
- Find a suitable animation in LottieFiles and adjust its speed if needed.
- Export the animation as a GIF.
- In Canva, create a custom-size design at 240 × 240 pixels.
- Import the GIF, position it in the square design, and make sure the composition is understandable at thumbnail size.
- Export the finished design as a GIF. Check the file size; compress it only if it is 3 MB or larger, because Product Hunt’s limit is under 3 MB.
This path begins with an existing animation, so the main design task is fitting it into a legible square thumbnail. The 2022 article gives these steps, but Canva’s official help does not verify the precise current controls or availability of each export option.
Method 2: Build the animation from a Canva video
- Start a video design in Canva and set its dimensions to 240 × 240 pixels.
- Create the frames that make up the animation. You can use the first frame to show the product name if that helps explain the thumbnail while it is still.
- Set how long each frame remains visible. The 2022 author recommends leaving the first frame on screen longer; this is a design suggestion, not a Product Hunt rule.
- Download the design as a GIF and check that the result is under 3 MB.
This method gives you control over the sequence and frame timing, but you create the animation from frames rather than starting with a ready-made Lottie file. Canva’s help confirms a related capability—making a short animated video from a still image—but not the exact interface steps or export options in this workflow.

Make the animation useful, not merely moving
- Make the first frame stand alone. Visitors see it before hover-triggered motion begins.
- Keep motion restrained. Avoid flashing or rapid cuts, and make sure any text remains readable at small size.
- Check the exported file. Confirm the image is square, measures 240 × 240 pixels, and is under 3 MB before uploading.
- Treat animation as optional. Product Hunt’s launch-preparation guide reports that fewer than one third of Product of the Day products used an animated GIF thumbnail. It also reports that about 53% of products reaching Product of the Day since 2021 included a video. These are descriptive associations, not evidence that animation or video caused a product to succeed; the guide’s publication year is not stated.
