Make a short, rights-cleared animated video that can loop cleanly, add it to OBS as a Media Source, and enable Loop. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the stream before leaving it unattended. If you need the channel to keep running while your computer is off, a cloud option such as StreamNeo can play uploaded videos to YouTube without a home computer running.
What you need to make a looping radio background
- A video editor or motion-graphics tool to create or assemble the animation. The OBS and YouTube guides cited here do not recommend a particular editing application.
- A finished video file, or several clips if you want a changing visual playlist.
- OBS Studio to play the video and send it to YouTube Live. OBS Media Source supports local media playback on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Music and visual assets whose rights allow use in a continuous public live stream.
Plan the canvas around the stream’s intended aspect ratio, choose a visual style, and decide whether you want one repeating scene or a playlist of clips. For a less noticeable repeat, design the ending to lead naturally into the opening, or keep movement subtle. That is creative guidance rather than a platform requirement.
Make an animation that can loop cleanly
Use a single clip for a consistent look
Create or source a video with the desired background, motion, and any permitted visual elements. Check the asset license for continuous public livestream use; permission to download or use an asset in a one-off video does not necessarily establish permission for this use.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a playlist for visual variety
If the radio needs more than one visual, prepare multiple clips and load them as a playlist in OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documents playlist playback and a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. OBS Media Sources documentation.

How to loop the background in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to create a scene for the radio stream or select the scene where the background belongs.
- Add the video. In the Sources panel, choose + and select Media Source. Give the source a name, then choose the local file. OBS lists supported examples including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Enable the repeat. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS documents this setting as off by default, so verify it rather than assuming the clip will repeat.
- Fit and preview the picture. Check that the animation fills the canvas as intended and that any text or focal elements remain inside the visible frame. Preview through a full repeat to catch a jarring transition or an unexpected blank interval.
- Add audio separately if needed. A background video can be silent while OBS carries the radio audio. If the video itself contains audio, check the OBS audio mixer so it does not unintentionally compete with the music.
When to choose a single Media Source or a VLC playlist
| Setup | Choose it when | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source with Loop | You want one consistent visual clip repeating. | A local media file; Loop is off by default. |
| VLC Video playlist with Loop Playlist | You want multiple clips to cycle for more variation. | VLC installed, plus a prepared playlist. |
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest details. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, share it, or include it in a public configuration file. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection process at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure and start OBS. Enter the YouTube server URL and key in OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming and check the Live Control Room for incoming video and stream health.
- Test before relying on it. Test with audio and visual movement similar to the intended broadcast. Confirm the animation loops, music is audible and balanced, and the stream remains healthy before leaving the setup unattended.
Set a sustainable video and audio quality
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz stereo. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection will sustain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection and computer can maintain. Check upload capacity and test the actual encoder configuration; a speed-test result alone does not show how the stream behaves over time. YouTube’s guide includes additional settings for other resolutions and frame rates.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A license to use music does not by itself ensure uninterrupted YouTube delivery: YouTube says that licensed third-party content may still interrupt a stream unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Clear the music rights for continuous public live streaming on YouTube.
- Clear rights to the animation, footage, artwork, and other visual assets as well as the audio.
- If using licensed third-party music, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- Do not assume that changing the background or using a looping visual resolves a rights issue with the music.
Keep a 24/7 stream running
Run OBS on your own computer
OBS is a direct way to combine a looping visual and music, but the computer, OBS session, and internet connection need to remain available for the stream to continue. Power interruptions, a lost connection, or a stopped encoder can interrupt broadcast. YouTube’s guide documents OBS as an encoder but does not establish comparative uptime for local and cloud setups.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The background stops after one play | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source properties and turn on Loop. |
| The VLC playlist source is missing | VLC is not installed. | Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and add a VLC Video source. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the stream has not been started in the encoder. | Compare the encoder settings with the current stream details in YouTube Studio; keep the key private. |
| Stream health is poor or playback stutters | The chosen bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may be too demanding for the upload connection or computer. | Check YouTube stream health, test the actual setup, and lower quality settings to a sustainable level. |
| The live stream is interrupted over music | YouTube may have matched third-party content; a license may not mean the channel is allowlisted. | Review the copyright notice and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. |
| The video or music is absent or unexpectedly mixed | The wrong source may be selected, the media may be silent, or OBS audio routing may be unsuitable. | Preview the scene and inspect the OBS audio mixer before going live. |
