To caption an always-on YouTube story stream, send captions to YouTube either embedded in the video as EIA-608/CEA-708 or through a supported captioning service using YouTube’s HTTP caption feed. Automatic live captions are another option for eligible streams, but they are English-only and require normal latency. Plan replay captions separately: live automatic captions do not carry over to the archived video.

Choose a live-caption method

YouTube’s requirement is that captions reach YouTube during the broadcast. The right workflow depends on the story’s language, the accuracy and editorial control you need, and how your stream is encoded.

Method What it requires Main consideration
Automatic live captions Enable the option in Live Control Room for the stream and select its video language. English-only, availability is limited by eligibility and rollout, and YouTube warns that speech recognition can be inaccurate.
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 Choose Embedded 608/708 in the stream’s caption settings and configure the encoder to send embedded captions. Captions travel with the video encoder feed; YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow.
Separate HTTP caption feed Choose the separate-feed caption option, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and configure compatible caption software to send captions over HTTP POST. Requires a separate caption connection. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.

YouTube’s listed software examples for the HTTP workflow include Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net. Confirm current versions and compatibility with the vendor before relying on a particular program. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Set up captions for a continuous stream

Option 1: Enable automatic live captions

  1. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and turn on closed captions.
  2. Select Automatic captions and choose the video language. YouTube’s current help page says live automatic captions are available in English only.
  3. Use normal latency. Automatic live captions require it; they are not available with low or ultra-low latency.
  4. Watch the captions in the live player with representative audio. If the option is unavailable or the captions are poor, use an embedded or separate caption feed instead.

Availability can depend on channel eligibility and rollout. Audio that is unclear, overlapping speakers, or multiple languages can make recognition less reliable. YouTube advises reviewing automatically generated captions rather than assuming they accurately represent speech. Details are in YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance.

Option 2: Embed captions in the video feed

  1. In the stream setup, enable closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
  2. Configure the encoder or captioning system to supply EIA-608 or CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video stream.
  3. Start a test broadcast and confirm captions appear in the viewer’s live player.

YouTube’s workflow currently supports one caption track for embedded captions, even though the caption standards can support more. This option makes the encoder path part of the accessibility setup: a video feed without the configured captions will not deliver them.

Option 3: Send a separate caption feed over HTTP

  1. Enable closed captions in the stream setup and select the separate caption-feed option.
  2. Copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL and enter it in compatible caption software or a caption provider’s system.
  3. Configure that system to send captions to YouTube using HTTP POST, then verify captions in the live player.
  4. Keep the stream system clock accurate. YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for its documented captioned-event workflow.

Each stream entry point can have one caption feed. Treat a restart, encoder handoff, loop transition, or stream-entry-point change as a point to recheck delivery: YouTube’s documentation does not promise that a separate caption feed will resume seamlessly across those events. Coordinate with the caption vendor and test your actual setup. See YouTube’s caption setup guidance.

Choose latency that supports captions

For a non-interactive story stream, normal latency is generally the sensible starting point when captions matter. YouTube says automatic live captions require normal latency, and its Live Streaming API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Lower latency can reduce the time viewers wait for the broadcast, but it is not compatible with the caption requirement in that mode. Read YouTube’s latency overview and Live Streaming API documentation when choosing the stream configuration.

Caption the replay separately

Do not assume that captions seen during a live broadcast will be present in its replay. Live automatic captions are not retained on the video; YouTube generates a separate set of automatic captions for the VOD, and those may differ from the live captions.

  4. Include meaningful non-speech audio when it matters to understanding the story, such as applause or thunder.

YouTube explains these options in Add subtitles & captions.

Test and monitor the whole caption path

  • Before launch, test a representative section of the story, including music, narration, pauses, and any overlapping voices.
  • Check the actual viewer-facing live player, not only the encoder or caption software’s status indicator.
  • During operation, watch stream health and caption delivery. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; see its encoder settings and stream health guidance.
  • For an always-on channel, repeat the check after reconnects, scheduled rotations, content changes, and caption-provider handoffs. These are practical checks, not events for which YouTube documents guaranteed caption continuity.
  • Review the replay captions independently after each stream or recording is published.

Troubleshoot common caption failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Automatic captions are not available The channel or stream may not be eligible yet; the feature is English-only and requires normal latency. Check the stream’s language and latency, then use an embedded or HTTP caption feed if the option remains unavailable.
Automatic captions appear wrong or erratic Unclear audio, overlapping speakers, or multilingual speech can impair speech recognition. Improve the speech mix where possible, monitor the live text, and use a reviewed or professionally produced caption feed when accuracy matters.
Embedded captions do not appear The stream setting may not match the encoder, or the encoder may not be sending embedded 608/708 captions. Confirm the selected caption mode, encoder configuration, and live-player output.
The HTTP caption feed is missing The caption system may not be posting to the correct signed URL, or the feed may have stopped. Verify the ingestion URL and provider connection, then check delivery in the live player. Recheck after a restart or handoff.
Live captions are absent from the replay Live automatic captions are not retained; the VOD has a separate caption-generation process. Check YouTube Studio for VOD captions, then correct or add them through the subtitle workflow.
