Plan captions twice: once for people watching your podcast live, and again for the replay. YouTube’s live automatic captions are English-only, available only to eligible channels using normal latency, and must be enabled for each stream. They do not carry over to the replay; YouTube generates a separate set of video-on-demand (VOD) captions that may differ. Check and correct those captions in YouTube Studio before treating an archived episode as ready.

Choose a live caption method

For a continuous podcast broadcast, first decide whether YouTube’s automatic captions are available for your stream or whether your production needs a professional caption feed. YouTube’s guidance and feature availability can change, so check the current help pages before a broadcast.

YouTube automatic captions

  • Availability: YouTube describes live automatic captions as English-only and being rolled out to eligible English channels. They are available with normal latency, not for every channel or stream.
  • Setup: Enable them in the individual stream’s live settings; this is not a channel-wide switch. In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions and select Automatic captions when the option is available. See YouTube’s automatic caption guidance.
  • Limit: These live captions are for the broadcast itself. After the stream ends, they do not remain on the video.

Professional captions sent to YouTube

If automatic captions are unavailable, your show is not in English, or you need more control over live captioning, YouTube documents workflows that send captions to the stream. Captions can be embedded in the video as EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, or supported software can deliver them over HTTP. The right route depends on your encoder, captioning software, and provider; confirm that your exact setup is supported in YouTube’s live caption requirements.

YouTube’s guidance says it currently supports one embedded 608/708 caption track. It also lists software options including Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net; treat the list as compatibility guidance, not an endorsement, and verify current versions and availability with YouTube and the vendor.

Prepare the continuous show and its archive

Set up captions before going live

  1. Choose the caption workflow. For an eligible English stream using normal latency, check whether the stream’s live settings offer automatic captions. Otherwise, arrange a compatible embedded or HTTP caption workflow and test it with your production setup before the show.
  2. Check that captions are visible. Confirm captions appear for a viewer during the live broadcast, not only in your production interface. Check that speakers’ names, recurring terminology, and any other essential spoken information are understandable.
  3. Plan recording separately. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends a local recording backup; consider producing shorter broadcast or episode units if that fits your format. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Clear speech capture can help automatic systems recognize speech, but a microphone does not provide captions or replace review. YouTube notes that background noise and other speech-recognition issues can affect automatic captions.

Make the replay accessible with reviewed episode captions

Do not assume the live captions become the episode’s subtitle track. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the broadcast; it generates new captions through its VOD process, and those may differ from the live output.

  1. Open the recording in YouTube Studio after YouTube has processed the archive, then check the video’s subtitle track.
  2. Review the generated captions. Listen while reading, paying particular attention to speaker names, technical terms, accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and passages affected by noise. YouTube warns that automatic captions can misrepresent speech and encourages creators to review and edit errors.
  3. Correct and save the captions in Studio. If a usable automatic track is not available, YouTube’s caption workflow also supports typing or pasting a transcript and setting timings automatically. See YouTube’s subtitles and captions instructions.
  4. Check the published episode as a viewer. Play the replay and confirm the corrected subtitle track can be selected and stays in sync. Keep the local recording as a fallback if the platform archive is missing or incomplete.

For episodes where precise wording is important, use a professional captioning workflow or have a qualified person review the transcript. YouTube encourages professional captions for live content where available and review of machine-generated captions. This is platform guidance, not a general statement that professional captioning is legally required.

Keep an always-on broadcast running

A continuous YouTube podcast stream still needs a reliable source of video and audio, as well as an independent caption plan. For a do-it-yourself setup, keep your encoder and source media running, use a caption method supported by your production chain, and record locally so the episode does not depend solely on YouTube’s archive. If you divide a continuous broadcast into shorter episode units, verify that the change suits your programming and archive needs.

Troubleshoot common caption and archive problems

Problem Likely reason What to do
Automatic captions are missing from live settings The channel may not be eligible or included in the rollout, the stream may not be in English, or it may not use normal latency. Check the current YouTube eligibility guidance. If automatic captions are unavailable, configure a supported embedded 608/708 or HTTP caption workflow.
Live viewers see no captions Captions may not be enabled for that stream, or an external caption feed may not be reaching YouTube. Check the stream’s Closed captions setting and confirm the encoder or supported caption software is sending the feed. Verify from a viewer’s perspective.
The replay has no captions, or its captions differ from the live ones Live automatic captions do not remain on the replay; YouTube creates a separate VOD caption track, which may differ. Inspect the replay’s subtitle track in Studio, review and edit it, or add a transcript through YouTube’s caption workflow.
Captions are inaccurate or omit speech YouTube identifies mispronunciations, accents, dialects, and background noise as factors that can lead to errors. Improve speech clarity where practical, then review and correct the captions. Use professional captioning or human review when accuracy is critical.
A very long stream is not archived YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Maintain a local recording backup and consider shorter broadcast units if they suit the show.
