To make an aesthetic wallpaper collage, choose the device it will be used on, build a canvas that matches its screen, arrange a small set of images around one clear focal point, and export and test the result on the device. A template can speed up the layout, but any photo editor or presentation app that supports image placement and export can work.
1. Choose the screen before designing
Decide whether the collage is for a phone lock screen, phone home screen, tablet, or desktop. Note the screen’s orientation and dimensions, and use the target device’s display settings or manufacturer information to find the correct size. Phones are often used in portrait and desktops in landscape, but check your actual screen rather than relying on that assumption.
Canva lists 1024 × 768, 1280 × 1024, and 1920 × 1080 pixels as examples of desktop wallpaper sizes. These are examples from Canva’s guidance, not universal specifications; desktop resolutions vary. See Canva’s wallpaper maker guidance for those examples.
2. Pick a visual direction and gather images
Choose a mood or palette first—such as warm neutral, coastal blue, floral, retro, or minimalist—then collect a manageable set of images that share a color, subject, or feeling. Personal photos are a straightforward option; otherwise, use assets whose terms allow your intended use. An image appearing in a search result does not by itself mean it is free to reuse.

For a balanced starting composition, choose one image to lead, several supporting images, and perhaps a small detail or texture. This is a practical design approach, not a fixed rule: fewer images can suit a quiet moodboard, while a scrapbook style can accommodate more visual variety.
3. Create a canvas for the target device
Start with a wallpaper template if you want a ready-made layout, or use a blank canvas for more control. In Canva, search for a wallpaper template or open a blank design, then set custom dimensions if you know the target screen size. You can also use another photo editor or presentation tool that lets you place, crop, and export images.

4. Arrange and unify the collage
Set the focal point
Place the largest or most meaningful photo first. Add the supporting images around it at varied sizes so the eye has a clear place to land instead of encountering a row of equally competing details.

Use consistent crops for a tidy grid, or mix full-bleed rectangles with framed snapshots for a scrapbook feel. Leave enough spacing for the layout to breathe, and check how the edges of the images sit against the canvas.

Connect images with color
A restrained shared palette, subtle background, or repeated accent can make photographs from different sources feel like one design. Keep the background and decoration quieter than the images if the collage is already visually busy.
Protect space used by the interface
Preview the design against the actual home screen or desktop. Keep faces, key details, and any text away from areas where app icons, labels, widgets, or lock-screen elements will appear. Canva likewise advises considering image size, colors, and layout behind apps and icons in its wallpaper guidance.

5. Add decoration only if it helps
Paper textures, simple borders, a small label, or a short phrase can reinforce a moodboard or scrapbook look. Make sure decoration remains secondary, and avoid small text in places where a clock or icons could cover it. If you use editor-provided or stock elements, check the applicable terms for that asset and your intended use.
6. Export and test on the device
- Download the finished design as a PNG or JPG. Canva’s wallpaper guidance names both formats.
- Apply the downloaded image as wallpaper on the intended device.
- Inspect the crop, sharpness, contrast behind icons, and whether interface overlays hide an important face or text.
- If the device scales or crops the image awkwardly, return to the editor, reposition the focal content or adjust the canvas, then export and test again.
A file that works on one screen is not guaranteed to fit another without cropping. Make a separate version when devices have different dimensions or orientations.

Image permissions depend on how you use the collage
Personal wallpaper use is different from selling wallpaper downloads, placing the collage in an advertisement, or redistributing the original assets. Check the terms for each image and for the use you have in mind.
Canva’s commercial-use guidance explains its Free and Pro content licenses, per-design Pro licensing for free-plan users, restrictions on redistributing unaltered media, and limits related to third-party rights and ownership. It also discusses restrictions involving trademarks and templates for distribution or sale. Review Canva’s commercial-use guidance for the applicable terms rather than assuming an element can be reused in any context.
For Unsplash images, consult the relevant official guidance for the specific use. Its license help center points to separate information about attribution, commercial projects, products for sale, releases, trademarks, and recognizable people or brands; it is not a blanket clearance for every image and use.
