Make AI-assisted writing sound more natural by revising it for a real reader, checking every claim, and adding only details that genuinely reflect your own perspective. Treat AI as a drafting and editing aid: you—not a prompt, detector, or chatbot—must decide what the piece means and whether it is accurate.

What makes AI-assisted writing feel natural and personal?

Natural writing is clear, specific, and suited to its audience. Personal writing reflects a real author’s choices: what they emphasize, how they explain it, and what they genuinely think or have experienced. Neither quality comes from sprinkling in casual phrases, first-person pronouns, or deliberate errors.

A practical editing handout from Oklahoma CareerTech puts it this way: “AI is the instrument, but you are the musician.” The useful distinction is that software can help shape a draft, but the writer remains responsible for its meaning, evidence, and voice. No single prompt or editing trick has been shown to reliably make every draft sound personal.

How to revise an AI-assisted draft

1. Set the audience, purpose, format, and tone

Before asking for edits, decide who will read the piece, what they need from it, where it will appear, and how formal it should sound. Tell the tool what must remain unchanged: the intended meaning, factual claims, technical terms, and your position. If you want to compare the result with your usual voice, you can provide a short sample of your own writing as an editorial reference. A sample is not a guarantee that a tool will reproduce your voice accurately.

2. Request specific editorial help

Vague requests to “humanize” a draft give you little control over what changes. Ask for bounded tasks instead: find repeated points, flag generic claims, identify abrupt shifts in formality, or suggest clearer wording. You can also ask the tool to mark where a genuine example from you would help, preserve the original meaning, and flag uncertainty rather than fill gaps with invented details. Treat its output as suggestions to review, not as proof that a revision is better.

3. Make the voice and content decisions yourself

Remove redundant previews and recaps, filler, and adjectives that do not add meaning. Repair transitions where one idea seems to jump to the next. Replace wording you would not normally choose, but keep technical language when precision requires it. Take a definite position only when you actually hold it and can support it.

Add a personal anecdote, example, or “I” or “we” only if it is true and appropriate for the format. Do not invent experience to make prose seem authentic. There is no validated one-third rule for how much AI-generated text a final piece should contain; a ratio proposed in one educational handout is editorial advice, not an evidence-based threshold.

4. Verify the claims and read the draft aloud

Check every fact, name, date, number, quotation, and cited source against authoritative material. AI-generated text can include confident but false, outdated, biased, or invented information. Keep a claim only when you can establish that it is accurate and relevant.

Then read the full piece aloud, or ask another person to read it. Listen for sentences that cause stumbling or require too much breath, repeated words or ideas, unclear passages, and changes in tone that feel out of place. Revise those spots and read the complete draft again; a sentence-level edit can affect the flow elsewhere.

Should you use an AI detector or ask ChatGPT whether it wrote the text?

No. Neither an AI detector nor ChatGPT’s self-report is reliable proof of authorship. OpenAI’s educator guidance says its experience does not support using detector research for reliable, consequential judgments, and discusses limitations such as false positives. OpenAI also says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether text was AI-generated or what it generated, and may make up an answer when asked.

Human intuition is not a dependable substitute. In six experiments with 4,600 participants, Jakesch, Hancock, and Naaman found that participants could not detect AI-generated self-presentations in the professional, hospitality, and dating contexts they tested. That result does not show that people can never recognize AI writing; it does show why a reader’s impression should not be treated as conclusive evidence of who wrote a passage.

Do you need to disclose AI assistance?

There is no universal disclosure rule established across every kind of writing. Check the current requirements of the organization, publisher, journal, or other venue receiving your work. If you are writing for a scientific publication, CDC’s May 28, 2026 guidance says to follow applicable organizational, funder, publisher, and partner requirements, remain accountable for the work, and explain substantive AI use with human oversight.

CDC’s suggested disclosure structure identifies the affected content, the action taken, the AI tool and purpose, and the human review. Its example is: “Portions of the introduction and discussion sections were edited using [Name of AI tool] [model/version, if available] [(manufacturer, location)] for language refinement; authors reviewed and approved all edits.” Adapt any disclosure to the actual venue’s current rules; this example is scoped to scientific work.

What to avoid when editing AI writing

  • Do not add fake personal details. A fabricated story or opinion makes the writing less trustworthy, not more personal.
  • Do not chase a supposed list of AI giveaway words. The available evidence does not establish a universal set of phrases that identifies AI authorship.
  • Do not add typos or awkward wording on purpose. Human-sounding writing is not the same as error-filled writing.
  • Do not accept polished prose as verified prose. Fluency does not establish that a claim, quotation, or source is correct.
  • Do not rely on a detector or chatbot confession to settle authorship. Both automated identification and human judgment have significant limits.
