An AI resume builder should present generated text as a proposal, not silently write it into someone’s resume. Show the original and proposed wording, let applicants inspect the change in context, and require a meaningful choice to accept, edit, or reject it. This gives applicants a chance to check that every skill and achievement is true to their experience.

Why AI resume edits need a review step

Resume suggestions can affect how an applicant describes their skills and work history. In recruitment guidance, the UK government says employees should be able to “meaningfully engage” with system outputs before acting on an AI-enabled prediction, decision, or recommendation. Applied to resume software, that principle favors a visible, user-controlled proposal over an automatic change. GOV.UK recruitment guidance does not prescribe a particular resume-builder interface; the workflow below is a product-design recommendation based on that principle.

Human review should also involve more than a cosmetic check. The European Commission’s FAQ on Article 50 says that, in that legal context, superficial checks such as spell-checking or grammatical correction do not count as human review or editorial control. The practical lesson for a resume builder is to make it possible for the applicant to assess the substance of a suggestion, not merely approve its wording. European Commission Article 50 FAQ

What a reviewable edit should contain

Represent each AI suggestion as a separate item with its own identity and status. This makes it possible to see what changed, track the applicant’s decision, and retain a route back to the prior text. A suggested edit should include:

Blackmagic Design USB Davinci Resolve Editor Keyboard
  • Designed for professional editors who need to work faster and turn over quickly
  • Designed for DaVinci Resolve 16
  • Integrated search wheel integrated directly into the keyboard
  • A stable item identifier so the suggestion can be tracked independently of other edits.
  • A destination identifying the resume section or location where the change would appear.
  • The current and proposed text so the difference is explicit.
  • A review status that distinguishes a new suggestion from one being considered or already decided on.
  • The user’s action—accepted, edited, or rejected—along with the prior text needed to understand or reverse the change.

A simple status flow is suggested → in review → accepted / edited / rejected. This is a recommended design pattern, not a regulatory requirement or an empirically established best interface.

How to design the review interaction

  1. Identify the suggestion as AI-generated. Make its origin clear before the applicant acts on it.
  2. Show the change and its destination. Present both the original and proposed wording, and identify the resume section that would be affected.
  3. Keep the surrounding resume context visible. Applicants should be able to judge whether the proposed sentence fits the rest of the section, not just evaluate it in isolation.
  4. Offer distinct choices to edit, accept, or reject. Do not make acceptance the only practical path or treat a spelling check as a meaningful review of the claim.
  5. Prompt a factual check before acceptance. For skills, achievements, and responsibilities, ask the applicant to confirm that the claim reflects their actual experience.
  6. Preserve the decision and prior wording. Keep the user’s final action legible in the saved resume and retain enough history to understand or reverse the change.

These controls translate guidance on meaningful engagement and substantive review into a possible workflow. The cited guidance does not validate this exact design, and obligations depend on the system and its deployment context.

How to tailor a resume without losing the applicant’s voice

A builder can suggest ways to make experience relevant to a role, but the applicant should remain the authority on what they have done and how they describe it. A useful review asks two separate questions: “Does this wording fit the role?” and “Is this claim accurate and still sounds like me?” If a suggestion adds an unverified skill, inflates responsibility, or changes the meaning of an achievement, the applicant should be able to edit or reject it rather than accept a polished but misleading version.

This is especially important when a system proposes keywords. A keyword may be relevant to a job description, but that alone does not make it a truthful resume claim. The product should help applicants evaluate the wording and its factual basis, not optimize for keyword inclusion at the expense of accuracy.

How to evaluate the design and its results

Evaluate the review experience separately from the resume content. A workflow can feel easy to use while still producing weak or inaccurate suggestions; conversely, a high-quality suggestion may be difficult to inspect or control. Useful design criteria include:

  • Whether the original and proposed text are both visible.
  • Whether applicants can inspect a suggestion in its resume context.
  • Whether they can edit, accept, or reject it without friction.
  • Whether the source of generated text and its factual support are clear.
  • Whether review status and prior text persist in a way that supports understanding and reversal.
  • Whether the interaction is usable and accessible.

Assess resume-content quality independently, for example through standardized expert ratings rather than relying only on user satisfaction. The paper ResumeGenAI: Supporting Job Seekers with LLM-Driven Resume Feedback, published in the Proceedings of the 7th ACM Conference on Conversational User Interfaces in 2025, describes examining both user experience and resume quality. Its comparison condition included curated best-practice guidance, a manual comparison guide, a personalization checklist, resource materials, and save/export. This is an example of an evaluation approach, not evidence that one review-state pattern improves hiring outcomes.

What the EU AI Act timing does—and does not—tell resume builders

The European Commission says Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. Whether a resume builder falls under a particular obligation depends on the system and how it is deployed; the date alone does not determine a specific product’s legal status. The Commission’s FAQ and guidelines for providers and deployers provide context, but a product’s actual obligations require assessment of its circumstances. The interface recommendations here are design guidance, not legal advice.
