To make a video in Gemini, open Gemini Apps, enter a description of the clip you want in the prompt box, and submit it. For stronger direction, specify the subject, action, visual style, camera, composition, lighting, and—if relevant—dialogue and other sounds. The controls available and usage limits can vary by account and can change.
Make a video in Gemini Apps

Open Gemini Apps and check which video-generation option is available to your account. Google’s Gemini Apps help page describes entering a video prompt in the text box; available controls may differ.

Describe one clear shot: name the subject, say what it does, and choose a visual style.

Add details that matter to the shot, such as camera position or movement, framing, focus, lighting, colors, and atmosphere.

If sound matters, include the exact dialogue in quotation marks and describe sound effects or ambient audio.

Review the result. If something is off, revise the prompt to address one specific element, then generate again. This is a practical way to isolate changes, not a guarantee that a revision will improve the result.
Write a prompt that gives the shot clear direction
Google’s Veo prompting guidance recommends a clear subject, action, and style, with optional camera, composition, focus, lighting, and audio details. Use only the details that help define the shot; piling unrelated actions into one request can make the result less predictable.

“[Shot size and camera movement] of [subject] [specific action] in [setting]. [Visual style]. [Lighting, palette, focus, or lens detail]. [Dialogue in quotes, if needed]. [Sound effects and ambient sound].”
Example
“A slow, eye-level dolly shot of a red paper kite lifting above a quiet seaside field at dawn. Hand-painted animation, soft blue shadows and warm peach light, shallow focus. Wind rustles the grass and the kite string hums softly.”
This example illustrates how to combine shot, style, lighting, focus, and ambience; it is not a claim about a generated result.

Improve a result by changing one thing at a time

Make the action specific. Replace a vague instruction such as “a kite in a field” with what the kite does and how the scene changes.

Choose a visual treatment. Name a style and, where useful, a palette or lighting mood so the scene has a coherent look.

Direct the camera and composition. Add a shot size, camera position or movement, and framing when they matter to the intended image.

Prompt audio separately in the description. State exact spoken words, then describe effects and ambient sound rather than relying on a visual prompt to imply them.

Keep the request focused. Google warns that prompting across multiple videos in one request is unsupported and may degrade performance or lead to unexpected results.

Google’s documentation offers prompt guidance, not a quantified claim that any particular wording or number of revisions will increase quality.

Gemini Apps and Gemini API do not expose the same workflow
Gemini Apps is the straightforward choice if you want to describe a clip in the app. The Gemini API is intended for programmatic or integrated workflows and documents model inputs and parameters that should not be assumed to appear in every app account. Check current eligibility, pricing, limits, and geography for the workflow you intend to use.

Veo 3.1 API controls and output specifications
The following specifications are from Google’s Gemini API documentation for Veo 3.1; they are not promises about settings available in Gemini Apps.

Inputs and shot guidance: The API accepts text and image inputs. Veo 3.1 supports up to three reference images and interpolation between first and last frames.

Duration and format: The API lists 4-, 6-, and 8-second outputs, at 24 fps, with one video per request. It supports landscape and portrait aspect ratios.

Resolution: The API lists 720p, 1080p, and 4K for Veo 3.1. Higher resolutions are limited to eight-second outputs, and 4K is unavailable on Veo 3.1 Lite.

Extension: Veo 3.1 and Veo 3.1 Fast can extend eligible Veo-generated video by seven seconds, up to 20 times, subject to input and output constraints. Google says voice does not extend effectively unless it appears in the last second of the input.

Language and safeguards: The API documentation says English is fully supported and other languages have not been evaluated. It also describes safety filters, memorization checks, and SynthID watermarking.

Keeping output: API-generated videos are stored for two days, so download any clip you need to retain within that period. Veo videos carry a SynthID watermark.
These API details are useful when building against Veo, but they do not establish what a particular Gemini Apps account can select.
Check access and limits in your account
Google’s Gemini Apps limits page says limits can change and depend on factors including prompt complexity, models and features used, and chat length. It does not establish one fixed video-generation count for every account or plan. Check the current availability and limit shown in Gemini rather than relying on a quota reported for another user.
A Google announcement from 2025 described an earlier Gemini workflow using Veo 2 selected from a model dropdown to produce eight-second, 720p landscape clips. That describes the earlier product experience, not current instructions; use the current Gemini help page and Veo API documentation for present-day guidance.
