To make a serial YouTube podcast play episodes in story order, set its Default Video Order to oldest to newest in YouTube Studio. For a show with independent episodes, choose newest to oldest so recent episodes appear first.
Change the episode order in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content, then Podcasts.
- Edit the podcast whose episode sequence you want to change.
- On the podcast details page, open Default Video Order.
- Choose oldest to newest or newest to oldest, then save.
YouTube treats a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. Its guidance is to order a serial show from oldest to newest; for an episodic show whose episodes can be heard independently, newest to oldest is the usual choice. Choose the order that fits your show

For a multi-season serial, arrange full-length episodes in the order listeners should consume them. YouTube advises against mixing clips, different shows, or videos uploaded from other channels into a podcast playlist. Its podcast discovery tips describe the playlist as containing full-length episodes from all seasons in consumption order.
If the podcast still looks out of order
Check whether it came from an RSS feed
YouTube sorts episodes imported from RSS by the release date supplied in the feed. If the feed has no release date, YouTube falls back to the video’s YouTube publish date. YouTube does not verify the RSS release date, so an incorrect date in the feed can affect the order. The channel’s Videos tab uses YouTube upload dates, which may differ from the podcast playlist order. See YouTube’s RSS podcast guidance.

Confirm you are editing a Podcast, not a Show
YouTube Shows have separate ordering behavior and controls. YouTube describes serial Shows as sequential, listed oldest to newest, and non-serial Shows as listed newest to oldest. If a playlist has a manually specified order, YouTube uses that order when assigning episode numbers. Verify whether the item is a podcast playlist or a Show before changing settings; the podcast workflow above does not apply to Show controls. See YouTube’s podcast and Show guidance.
Review the playlist contents
- Make sure the podcast playlist contains the full-length episodes you intend listeners to hear.
- Remove clips, episodes from other shows, or uploads from other channels if they do not belong in the show.
- If a playlist was classified as a podcast by mistake, YouTube Studio provides an option to remove podcast features.
