To make a YouTube podcast livestream recover after a server restart, configure the encoder to start at boot and restart if it exits, preserve the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and make sure the audio or video source is available again. Then check YouTube Live Control Room: an encoder running again does not guarantee that YouTube has resumed the same broadcast.
What has to recover
A reboot can interrupt several separate parts of a livestream. Treat them as separate checks rather than assuming one reconnect setting handles everything:
- The source: the podcast file, camera, microphone, or remote feed must be accessible.
- The encoder: OBS or FFmpeg must launch again after the host boots and recover if its process exits.
- The connection: the host must reach YouTube’s ingest server through its network and firewall.
- The YouTube broadcast: YouTube must accept the encoder connection and put the event into the intended live state.
YouTube requires an encoder to use the stream’s Live server URL and stream key. Its documentation describes stream keys as credentials and address information for the encoder; it supports reusable custom keys. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up recovery for a server reboot
1. Preserve the YouTube destination securely
Keep the correct Live server URL and stream key in the encoder’s configuration or a protected secret store. Do not expose the key in public scripts, logs, or other places where someone else could use it. A reboot by itself usually does not require a new key. If you reset or replace the key, update the encoder configuration as well.

2. Make the encoder start at boot and restart on failure
Configure the server’s operating-system service manager or another process supervisor to launch the encoder after the network and any required storage mounts or configuration are ready. Set a restart policy for unexpected process exits, and make sure the service starts under an account that can read the source media and configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the connection to YouTube; boot startup and process supervision are operating-system tasks, and their exact setup depends on the host and service manager.
3. Restore the podcast source
For a file-based show, confirm that the file path still exists after reboot, that mounted storage is available before the encoder starts, and that the encoder is configured to loop the source if continuous playback is intended. For camera or microphone inputs, verify that the devices reconnect and are available to the account running the encoder. A restarted encoder cannot send media from a source that has not recovered.

If the source is a remote HTTP audio feed, FFmpeg documents HTTP reconnect options in its protocol documentation. Those options apply to the relevant HTTP connection; they do not automatically repair an RTMP output connection or control YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle.

Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube’s live settings and decide whether they fit the way the event is scheduled and operated. After the host recovers, inspect Live Control Room to confirm YouTube recognizes the incoming stream and that the audience-facing event is live. A running encoder process alone is not proof that the event resumed.

5. Test a controlled restart
- Confirm the source plays and the encoder is connected to the intended YouTube event.
- Restart the server during a planned test, rather than relying on an actual outage as the first test.
- Check that the service manager launched the encoder, the source is playing, and the encoder logs show a connection attempt.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify the incoming stream and broadcast state.
- If any stage fails, diagnose that stage before changing unrelated settings. Record the service logs and the time of the interruption for later troubleshooting.
OBS and FFmpeg: different recovery layers
OBS on a desktop or server
OBS has a reconnect feature for transient connection interruptions. Enable it for network drops, but do not mistake it for reboot recovery: a full host restart also requires the operating system to start OBS again at boot. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its connection troubleshooting guide is a useful starting point when OBS remains running but loses its connection.
FFmpeg on a Linux host
Run FFmpeg under a service manager that starts it at boot and restarts the process after an unexpected exit. Verify that the service has access to the media, configuration, and protected stream key. Use protocol reconnect options only for the protocol and direction they cover: FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect controls should not be treated as a fix for an RTMP output session or as a promise that YouTube will restore the same event.

When HLS is relevant
YouTube supports HLS ingestion for compatible encoders and specifies required settings in its HLS setup guidance. HLS sends segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream. Choosing HLS is a compatibility and latency decision, not a general restart-recovery solution.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not come back

What to expect from YouTube after an interruption
Do not assume every server outage will resume the same broadcast automatically. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop controls, but its cited encoder guidance does not promise a universal outage window or same-event recovery behavior for every interruption. Verify the state in Live Control Room after recovery.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the stream ends. That is an archive rule, not a guarantee that a stream interrupted by a reboot will continue as the same event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
