Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play the playlist, then switch to a separate holding-screen scene between videos. This is a manual workflow: the OBS documentation cited here describes playlist playback and scene switching, but does not establish an automatic holding-screen trigger at each playlist-item boundary.
Why a YouTube playlist is not the livestream
A YouTube watch playlist organizes uploaded videos for viewers; it does not send those videos as an encoder livestream. For a live broadcast of local video files, encoder software such as OBS sends the video feed to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, you configure the stream and provide the server URL and stream key to the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains that connection, while its playlist guidance covers playlists as collections of videos.
Set up the playlist and holding screen in OBS

OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s media-source documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Create a playlist scene
In OBS, create a scene for the program playlist and add a VLC Video source. Add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. Set Loop Playlist according to whether the sequence should restart after its final item. The VLC source also provides a Visibility Behaviour control; check its setting for the way you intend to show and hide the source.

Create a holding-screen scene
Add a second scene, then place a still image and any desired text or other OBS sources in it. OBS scenes can combine media and other sources; its Overview Guide explains scenes and stream layouts.

Choose a transition and switch manually
Choose a scene transition such as Cut or Fade. When a playlist video ends, switch to the holding-screen scene; switch back to the playlist scene when you are ready to resume. The documented controls support scene switching and transitions, but the sources cited here do not document an automatic interstitial at each VLC playlist boundary. Treat the handoff as manual unless you independently verify a specific automation method and its current compatibility.

Prepare the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup.

Enter the connection details in OBS
Open OBS stream settings and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it is the credential YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed.

Start the encoder and preview
Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and follow its prompt to go live. Test the playlist order, transitions, picture, and audio before the event, and monitor the feed while it is running. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend previewing and testing the setup.
What to verify before going live
- Confirm that VLC is installed in the version matching your OBS architecture, and that the VLC Video source can access each local file.
- Check playlist order, shuffle, and loop behavior in a test run.
- Practice switching to the holding screen and back so the interval does not depend on an unverified automatic trigger.
- Confirm the correct YouTube stream URL and private stream key are in OBS, then verify the preview and audio in Live Control Room.
- Use media you have the rights to broadcast. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to livestreams as well as uploaded videos; review YouTube copyright basics and the applicable live-stream policies before using music or other third-party content.
