YouTube Live DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue a sleep stream while it is still running. But YouTube does not document a guarantee that it will restore the exact playback position after a Wi-Fi drop, app closure, or device restart. If playback returns to the live edge, use the player timeline to seek back—if the stream’s DVR window allows it.
Turn on DVR for the live stream
DVR is the setting that enables viewers to pause and rewind a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the stream in the Live Control Room and find Enable DVR under the stream settings’ additional settings. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
YouTube notes that changes to the DVR setting apply to viewers who start playing after the change. Don’t assume that switching it on midstream immediately changes playback for everyone already watching. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

What to do when playback reconnects at the live edge
- Show the player controls. If the video has returned to live playback, bring up the timeline.
- Seek back to the part you were watching. Drag or tap the timeline to the desired point, provided DVR is available and that point remains within its rewind window.
- If you cannot reach far enough back, check the stream and device limits. DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube also lists lower limits for Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions. You cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
- If playback keeps buffering or failing, troubleshoot playback separately. Reload the watch page or app, check the internet connection, adjust video quality, or reopen the player. These steps may help playback, but they do not restore a saved position. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot video streaming issues
Pause and resume is not the same as reconnect recovery
YouTube documents that a viewer who pauses and then resumes while the live stream is running continues from the pause point. That describes normal pause-and-resume behavior in an active stream. The official guidance does not establish that the player saves and restores the exact playhead after an internet disconnect, app closure, or device restart. Turning on DVR therefore enables pause and seeking, but it is not a promise of automatic reconnect recovery. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams

Settings and workarounds for sleep streams
Consider normal latency if chat interaction is not important
Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can increase viewer buffering; its normal-latency option is intended for streams without interaction and offers the lowest viewer buffering among the latency settings it describes. For a sleep stream that does not depend on real-time chat, the creator can consider normal latency to reduce buffering pressure. This is a buffering trade-off, not a way to preserve a viewer’s position after reconnecting. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Use a separate recording for a specific sleep segment
If a viewer needs to return reliably to a particular part of the sleep audio, the creator can consider publishing a separate on-demand recording or a segmented recording when available. That gives the viewer a distinct recording to open; it is an editorial workaround, not a YouTube Live reconnect feature.

If you are the creator and want a YouTube sleep stream to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not make YouTube restore a viewer’s playhead after reconnecting.
