Make the playlist and plan the live stream as two separate things: create a playlist from an existing vertical video or Short using More → Save → Create new playlist, then configure the vertical live format in YouTube Studio before you start. After the stream, add its archive and useful clips to the playlist. A playlist organizes videos; it is not itself a live stream.
1. Create a playlist from a vertical video or Short
- Open the vertical video or Short you want to use as the starting point.
- On the video page, select More → Save → Create new playlist.
- Give the playlist a clear name, such as “New product showcase,” and choose a visibility option offered in your account.
- Open each other relevant video and add it to the playlist using the available save-to-playlist control.
YouTube describes playlists as collections of videos. Its help page notes that some functionality is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts, so check the options in your account rather than assuming every playlist feature applies to a Shorts-only collection. 2. Set up the vertical live showcase before going live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live and configure the scheduled stream in Live Control Room.
- Choose the vertical presentation and preview how the product appears on a phone screen. In dual streaming, YouTube’s default vertical view is a center crop; layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked.
- If you want both horizontal and vertical versions, configure dual streaming before starting. Live Control Room supports both formats; if you use a third-party encoder, YouTube documents RTMP(S) dual streaming with the corresponding stream keys.
- Check that the product remains visible and legible in the vertical composition, particularly if the source material is horizontal or places important details near the edges.
- Start the stream only after confirming the format. YouTube says, “You can’t add the vertical format once the stream has started.” YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Vertical live streams provide a full-screen mobile viewing experience and can be discovered in the Shorts feed. Viewers in that feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version when you dual stream. Both versions use the same live chat. YouTube’s comparison lists clickable links in chat or the channel description, pre-roll and mid-roll ads, and live redirect as horizontal-only capabilities, so do not promise those features in the vertical live feed. 3. Add product tags only when eligible
If the channel and products qualify, use the Shopping tab in Live Control Room to add tags before the stream or after it ends. Tags added after the stream can appear during replays. Whether viewers can see a product depends on supported locations, shipping availability, retailer availability, and content eligibility. Some content, including made-for-kids or ineligible-for-monetization content, does not show product tags. YouTube Help: Tag products in your content.

For products from other brands, YouTube Shopping eligibility includes YouTube Partner Programme and subscriber-threshold criteria, supported creator locations, and restrictions that can affect music channels or channels with certain policy issues. Check the current eligibility shown in Studio. Retailers handle transactions, delivery, payment, and order support. - Tag an item only when it is clearly identifiable and meaningfully related to the showcase.
- Keep it prominent and clearly depicted, and show it being used as intended.
- Follow these relevance and depiction rules for live streams, Shorts, and standard videos. YouTube Help: Tag products in your content.
4. Add the archive and highlights after the stream
YouTube uploads the live archive to your channel by default. Add the archive and any useful highlight clips to the showcase playlist so viewers can find the live demonstration alongside the related vertical videos. YouTube recommends: “Organize the archive and highlight clips into playlists.” YouTube Help: Promote your live stream.

For qualifying mobile streams, YouTube may offer the option to save a highlight as a Short. The stream must be vertical, between 10 minutes and 12 hours, streamed with the YouTube mobile app, not be a screencast, have chat enabled, not be made for kids, and meet YouTube’s safety requirements. A saved highlight is private by default; change its visibility if you want it public. YouTube Help: Promote your live stream.
