To loop a prerecorded museum exhibit video on YouTube Live, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file. Test the feed privately, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and go public only after confirming that the video, audio, and broadcast rights are ready.
Before you start: confirm channel access and media rights
Check YouTube livestream eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first livestream, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and allow time for activation before scheduling the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Confirm rights to every part of the exhibit video
Having a video file or displaying an object in a gallery does not by itself establish permission to livestream all of its components. Review rights for artwork and image reproductions, film clips, narration, music, and other third-party material. Confirm permitted platforms, territories, broadcast duration, and whether an archived replay may remain available. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music rights. This platform requirement is not a legal conclusion about a particular collection or jurisdiction.

Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder-based stream or scheduled event, following YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Choose the event’s visibility. Use unlisted or another non-public option for a test; select public when you are ready for viewers.

Retrieve the stream URL and stream key associated with that stream. The key is a credential: keep it out of public screenshots, shared scripts, and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. YouTube describes managing keys and stream settings here.
Loop a single exhibit video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option: -1 requests infinite repetition, while 0 means no loop. Put the option before the corresponding -i input. The following is a configuration example, not a tested command guaranteed to work with every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube stream:

-c:a aac -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"Replace exhibit.mp4 with the file path and the placeholders with the destination details shown for your YouTube stream. Do not publish a real key. The example uses common video and audio encoders, but the right codecs, output URL or protocol, frame rate, bitrate, scaling, and audio handling depend on the source, the stream configuration, and your installed FFmpeg build and available compute. Consult the FFmpeg documentation, follow the current YouTube settings for the selected stream, and validate the actual feed in a test event.
Multiple files need a separate playback plan
The single-file loop above does not define how to play a sequence of different videos. A playlist or concatenation method can have compatibility, transition, or gap issues, so test your chosen approach with the actual files. Check joins, audio continuity, aspect ratio, and file compatibility before using it for a scheduled public event.

Choose output settings and test the feed
Match settings to the source and upload connection
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codec choices, subject to codec and stream-protocol considerations. For ordinary SDR, the guidance specifies Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth; HDR requires different settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Set resolution and bitrate to suit the source and stable upload capacity rather than assuming the highest quality is best.

Check that the preview shows the expected exhibit footage and that audio is present, clear, and continuous.

Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and adjust settings if the upload connection cannot sustain the selected quality.

Confirm the test event is accessible at its intended visibility. If you also record locally, verify that the local archive is intact.

Run and monitor the public broadcast
When the test is satisfactory and rights and event details are settled, start the public event in Live Control Room and keep the FFmpeg process running. Monitor the preview and stream-health indicators during the broadcast. A local workstation or server must remain available, connected, and able to upload for the feed to continue; the operational choice depends on institutional IT approval, connection reliability, security practices for the stream key, cost, and who can restart and monitor the process.

You cannot start a livestream: verify the channel is verified and eligible, and check whether first-time activation is still pending; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours.

The event does not receive video: confirm FFmpeg is using the stream URL and key for the selected event, and that the key has not been mistyped or reset. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.

The picture or sound is missing or wrong: check the Live Control Room preview, source file, selected codecs, audio handling, and output settings. Test with the same media and FFmpeg build before going public.

The stream health is poor or the feed breaks up: lower output quality or bitrate to a level the stable upload connection can sustain, then test again. YouTube advises matching quality to available connection capacity.

The loop does not repeat as expected: confirm

A rights claim or restriction appears: review the rights for every embedded component, especially music and third-party footage, and resolve permissions or replace material before the public broadcast.
