You can make a YouTube stream recover after a power outage, but no single setting does the whole job. Power must return, the PC must start, Windows must launch OBS, the network must be ready, and YouTube must accept the encoder feed. Configure and test each link. YouTube’s Auto-start setting handles only the encoder-to-YouTube step; it does not turn on your computer or open OBS.
What has to happen for the stream to restart
For a locally encoded stream, recovery depends on a chain of separate steps:
- Electrical power returns and the computer powers on.
- Windows starts and launches OBS.
- OBS begins streaming with the correct YouTube stream URL and key.
- The modem, router, and internet connection are ready.
- YouTube accepts the incoming feed and the live broadcast appears in Live Control Room.
A failure at any step can leave the stream offline. YouTube’s Auto-start can let the encoder start or stop a broadcast, but it cannot start a powered-off PC or launch OBS. YouTube describes the setting this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Configure the PC to turn on when power returns
Check the computer or motherboard manual for a firmware setting commonly named “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or “After Power Failure.” If the option exists, select the behavior that powers the PC on when AC power returns. Names and availability differ by manufacturer, so there is no universal menu path.

This setting only powers on the computer. It does not configure Windows, OBS, the network, or YouTube, so continue with the startup setup below.
Make Windows launch OBS and start streaming
An OBS Project forum answer recommends adding the --startstreaming argument to an OBS shortcut and placing the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder, or configuring a task in Task Scheduler. These are community-recommended approaches, not guaranteed behavior on every Windows or OBS configuration. Test the chosen method with a normal restart before relying on it after an outage. OBS also needs the correct destination and credentials configured. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the stream URL and key associated with the intended stream; enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password. If you reset it in YouTube, replace the old key in OBS as well. YouTube Help: Encoder setup
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Enable YouTube Auto-start
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream settings and enable Auto-start.
- Save or confirm the setting, then test by starting the encoder and checking whether YouTube begins the broadcast.
With Auto-start enabled, YouTube can start or stop the broadcast in response to the encoder. Reusing stream settings also copies Auto-start and Auto-stop selections, so verify those options when reusing a setup. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Account for network startup delays
After an outage or reboot, the PC may start before the modem or router has reconnected to the internet. OBS might therefore make its first connection attempt too early. An OBS forum reply suggests delaying or retrying OBS startup, or using a script that waits for connectivity. Treat this as community guidance and test it on your own equipment; automatic reconnect after an established stream drops is not the same as a successful initial connection when the network is still unavailable. OBS Project Forums discussion
If your particular setup needs a delay, configure a scheduled launch or retry method only after confirming it works through a full reboot. A delay that is too short may still start before the network; one that is too long extends the outage in the broadcast.

Use a UPS for brief interruptions, not as the whole recovery plan
A UPS can keep the streaming PC and network equipment powered during a short interruption, depending on connected load and available battery runtime. It cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast, and it will not carry equipment through an outage longer than its runtime. Choose capacity based on the actual equipment load and the runtime you need; without those details, a specific model or runtime cannot be recommended. Automatic startup configuration is still needed if power fails beyond the UPS’s capacity.
Test the complete recovery chain
- Perform a normal Windows restart and confirm the PC reaches the desktop or required startup state.
- Confirm OBS launches and begins encoding and streaming without manual input.
- Test what happens if the network is not ready when OBS launches, and verify any delay or retry behavior.
- When safe, simulate a brief power interruption and confirm the firmware power-restoration behavior.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room and the public watch page to verify the stream is actually live.
Do not assume that a successful OBS launch means the YouTube broadcast recovered. Validate the encoder connection and the public stream. Recovery timing and behavior depend on the specific PC, firmware, network, Windows setup, OBS configuration, and YouTube session.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not return
| Symptom | Likely point of failure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The PC remains off after power returns | Firmware power-restoration option is absent or not configured | Check the computer or motherboard manual for the AC power recovery setting. |
| The PC starts, but OBS does not | Windows startup shortcut or scheduled task did not run | Test the Startup-folder or Task Scheduler configuration with a normal restart. |
| OBS opens but does not stream | OBS was not instructed to start streaming, or the stream destination/key is invalid | Verify the startup argument or task configuration and confirm the YouTube URL and key in OBS. |
| OBS attempts to connect before internet access is available | Router or internet service started more slowly than the PC | Test a delayed launch or connectivity retry; confirm the network is online before OBS attempts to stream. |
| Encoder is active but YouTube does not show a live broadcast | Auto-start may be disabled, or YouTube may not be receiving the intended stream | Check Auto-start, the selected stream, URL, and key in Live Control Room. |
| The stream worked before a key reset but fails afterward | OBS still has the old stream key | Update OBS with the replacement key from YouTube. |
If the stream uses prerecorded video rather than a live camera
A local OBS setup still depends on the PC and network recovering. For prerecorded loops, a cloud service is a different workflow because the uploaded video does not depend on a home encoder staying powered. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that is not a way to restore a live local camera feed. Check the service’s current availability, features, and terms before choosing it. YouTube Help: Encoder setup
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube videos, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so the computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
