To resume the right episode after a crash, save the current episode ID and playback position somewhere that survives a player or host restart. When playback restarts, load that saved state and resume the episode; then restore or reconnect the encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube’s stream key and auto-start settings can help restore the broadcast connection, but they do not checkpoint a custom story playlist or choose its episode for you.
Separate story recovery from stream recovery
A 24/7 story stream has two pieces that can fail independently: the player that chooses and plays episodes, and the encoder that sends video to YouTube. A healthy encoder reconnection does not prove that the story player resumed correctly. YouTube documents stream ingestion and broadcast controls, but not episode-aware recovery for a custom continuous playlist.
Design recovery around that boundary: persist story position in your playback system, and configure the encoder and YouTube broadcast to reconnect as appropriate. YouTube’s Live Control Room can report whether it is receiving encoder data; that status does not confirm which episode is on screen.

Save the episode and playback position outside the player
Your player needs a durable checkpoint: at minimum, an episode identifier and an offset within that episode. Store it somewhere that remains available if the playback process restarts; if the host itself can fail, the checkpoint must also survive that host failure. Saving only an in-memory playlist position is not enough.

Choose when to checkpoint
- Write the episode ID and current offset at useful intervals during playback, rather than only when an episode ends.
- Update the checkpoint when moving to the next episode, so a crash during a transition does not leave an old episode paired with a new offset.
- Keep the values together as one consistent checkpoint. A mismatched ID and offset can resume at the wrong place even when both values were saved.
The interval is an implementation choice: a less frequent checkpoint can mean more replay after a crash; a more frequent one requires more writes. The YouTube documentation described here does not prescribe a checkpoint interval or provide this player-side mechanism.
Make restart use the checkpoint
- Have a supervisor detect that the playback process has stopped or become unhealthy and restart it.
- On startup, have the player read the last valid checkpoint.
- Load the identified episode and seek to its saved offset. If the checkpoint is missing or invalid, define a deliberate fallback, such as starting at a known episode, rather than relying on an accidental playlist default.
- Confirm the player is producing the intended episode before treating recovery as complete.
A restart procedure that merely launches the playlist from its beginning restores playback, but not necessarily the intended point in the story.
Make the YouTube encoder and broadcast recoverable
YouTube describes a stream key as the password and address for the encoder feed. Keep the intended stream key and destination URL in the encoder’s configuration, and ensure the encoder is pointed at the expected YouTube stream. A reusable custom stream key can be appropriate when you want to reuse stream settings; YouTube’s “Reuse settings” option copies metadata, settings, and the stream key to a new stream. Treat the key as a credential and do not expose it publicly.

Check auto-start and auto-stop
Auto-start and auto-stop are separate controls. With auto-start enabled, a broadcast can start when video begins arriving on its bound stream. With auto-stop enabled, the API documentation says the broadcast ends about a minute after transmission stops. That delay is not a durable recovery window or a guarantee that a crashed player will return to the right episode.
If your workflow does not enable those controls, an API client may need to transition the broadcast status explicitly when the stream starts and ends. For custom API implementations, distinguish the reusable stream resource that receives encoder data from the event-specific broadcast resource. Reusing an ingestion resource does not mean each broadcast is the same event.
Verify the feed, not just the connection
YouTube recommends checking the stream resource status: active means its servers are receiving data from the encoder. After reconnecting, also inspect the actual program output or monitor it through your workflow to verify the episode and position. Receipt of data alone cannot establish that story recovery succeeded.

If a third-party encoder reports that it cannot start, YouTube troubleshooting advises opening Live Control Room, copying the stream key, and pasting it into the encoder. After configuration changes, verify both the current key and destination URL.

YouTube DVR is a viewer feature: it can let viewers pause, rewind, and continue from where they paused. It does not save the producer’s story playlist position or choose the correct episode after a player crash. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began, and DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That duration limit concerns viewer DVR, not crash recovery.

Validate your design in a controlled private or unlisted setup. A successful encoder reconnect alone is not a complete test.

- Start the story stream and record which episode and offset are playing.
- Stop or terminate the playback process in a controlled way, then confirm the supervisor restarts it and the player loads the saved episode and offset.
- Separately interrupt the encoder feed and check whether it reconnects with the intended stream key and destination.
- Check the selected auto-start and auto-stop behavior, including whether your workflow needs an explicit broadcast-status transition.
- Verify the viewer URL and what viewers see during the interruption and after recovery.
- Repeat around an episode transition to check that the checkpoint does not combine a stale episode ID with a newer offset.
Document the expected fallback for missing state, a failed seek, or an unavailable broadcast. No particular encoder or recovery timing is established here; behavior depends on your player, supervisor, encoder, and YouTube configuration.
Common recovery failures and fixes
- The stream is back, but the story starts at the wrong episode: the encoder recovered while the player restarted from its default position. Persist and load episode ID and offset in the player.
- The episode is right, but it restarts too early: the checkpoint is stale or written only at episode boundaries. Save useful in-episode checkpoints and update state consistently at transitions.
- YouTube receives data, but the broadcast does not behave as expected: receiving encoder data and broadcast lifecycle transitions are distinct. Check auto-start/auto-stop and, if your client does not enable them, whether it explicitly transitions broadcast status.
- The encoder cannot start: check the current stream key and destination URL in Live Control Room and the encoder configuration; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into the encoder.
- Viewers cannot rewind to the expected point: DVR is viewer-side, may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, and cannot provide producer-side episode selection or seek before the stream began.
