If you can’t type in a Word document, first check whether Word is in Viewing or Reviewing mode. If Editing is available, select it. If not, the cause may be Protected View, a read-only opening preference, sharing permissions, or an editing restriction. Use the fix that matches the message or setting you see; some protections can only be changed by the document owner or an authorized user.
Switch Word from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing
In Word, look near the upper-right corner for the mode menu, often near Share. If it says Viewing or Reviewing, open the menu and select Editing if that option is available. The labels and their location can vary by platform and version.
Viewing is read-only. Reviewing is intended for comments and suggested revisions, while Editing provides full access to make and save changes when you have permission. Microsoft explains the modes in its Word document modes guide.

Word may open files from the internet, unsafe locations, or certain email attachments in Protected View. It can also use this view when a file fails validation. Protected View is a security feature, so don’t enable editing unless you trust both the file and its source.

- Check the Protected View message bar at the top of the document.
- If you trust the file, select Enable Editing.
- If Word shows a validation warning instead, Microsoft documents File > Edit Anyway for some cases.
An administrator may prevent you from leaving Protected View. Microsoft describes the feature and its safeguards in What is Protected View? Avoid turning off protective settings globally as a routine fix.
Turn off the Always Open Read-Only preference
If Word opens the document read-only but does not show a Protected View warning, check whether the document is set to always open that way.

- In desktop Word, select File > Info.
- Open Protect document.
- If Always Open Read-Only is selected, clear it.
This changes how the document opens; it does not grant permission to edit a file controlled by its owner or organization. See Microsoft’s Enable editing in your document guidance.

Request permission for a shared document
If Editing is missing or Word says you don’t have permission, the owner or organization controls access. Ask the owner to grant you edit permission. Changing a local setting cannot override sharing permissions.

In Word for the web, you may be able to choose File > Create a Copy and edit your own copy. This does not change the shared original, and the option may not be available in every situation. Microsoft covers web editing and access options in Edit a document in Word for the web and explains view-only sharing in Save as read-only in Word for the Web.
Handle Restrict Editing through an authorized user
A document may have editing restrictions set under Review > Restrict Editing. If you own the document or are authorized to change its protection, select Stop Protection. Word may require the protection password or confirmation that you are the authenticated owner.

If you don’t have that authorization or password, ask the owner to change the restriction or provide an editable version. There is no appropriate settings-based workaround for enforced protection. Microsoft explains how authorized users manage protected sections in Allow changes to parts of a protected Word document.

If the file is a PDF, convert it rather than changing Word permissions
A PDF is not a Word document with read-only mode turned on. When possible, ask for the original Word file. You can also open or convert PDF content in Word to create an editable document, but conversion can change the layout and formatting. Microsoft outlines the options in Edit or make changes to a PDF file.
