Build a seven-day programming grid, then configure a playback system to follow it. The grid tells you what should play and when; it is separate from the YouTube live event carrying the video. For a continuous broadcast, choose whether playlists loop or advance between dayparts, test the handoffs, and keep a local recording if you need a complete archive—YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.
Plan the rotation before setting up the stream
A reliable schedule starts with a usable library, not a playlist hastily assembled in an encoder. Keep the asset inventory separate from the weekly grid so you can change programming without losing track of rights and file details.
Inventory every video
Record these details for each asset:
- Title and file name
- Runtime and theme
- Audience suitability
- Rights evidence, including any territory, term, and live-stream restrictions
- Last-played date
- Any required opening slate, transition, or end card
Set aside videos whose permissions or license terms are unclear. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. A video being available on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Keep permission records with the asset inventory and check that they cover your intended use. Choose a repeat pattern viewers can learn
Use a manageable set of recurring themes—such as tutorials in the morning and archive collections in the afternoon—so viewers can recognize the channel’s rhythm. Decide whether each block repeats, advances to another block, or gives way to a holding slate after its final video. Avoid cycling a small library so frequently that the same items recur before viewers have a reason to return.

There is no ideal rotation length established in YouTube’s cited guidance. Choose a cadence your library can sustain, publish it clearly, and communicate changes. YouTube recommends sustainable scheduling and recurring formats or day associations in its live scheduling guidance.
Draft a seven-day programming grid
Use UTC or label the time zone explicitly, especially if your audience spans regions. List the video order and total duration for each block; add transition time rather than assuming a playlist fills a day exactly. Include a maintenance window and contingency programming instead of treating every minute as guaranteed content.

For an operational grid, add columns for UTC start time, exact video sequence, block duration, transitions or slates, title and description, rights check, and the person or automation responsible for the handoff. The themes above are examples, not platform requirements.

Calculate block duration
Sum the runtimes of the videos in a block, then add time for transitions, slates, or planned gaps. Decide what happens at the end: loop the entire playlist, roll into the next block, or show a holding slate. A playlist that is shorter than its assigned slot will otherwise repeat or end earlier than the grid implies.
Configure playback and connect to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and a stream key. The key routes the encoder’s feed to your stream, so treat it as private and enter it only in the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube’s instructions for this connection are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
- For one file: Add an OBS Media Source, select the local video, and enable looping if that file should repeat.
- For a list of files: Add a VLC Video source and build the playlist in the intended order.
- Check playlist behavior: OBS documents a Loop Playlist option; shuffle is off by default, which preserves a deliberate order. Confirm the controls in your installed version. The OBS knowledge-base article was dated January 11, 2022, and describes playlist playback, not a complete seven-day calendar scheduler. See OBS Media Sources.
- Plan daypart changes: Prepare a playlist for each block and arrange an operator handoff or suitable automation rule for the grid time. Do not assume a playlist alone will switch blocks on a weekly calendar.
- Connect the encoder: Enter YouTube’s server URL and private stream key in the encoder settings, then verify the intended playlist and output before going live.
Fixed order makes the schedule more predictable; shuffle can add variety but makes it harder to promise which video will play at a given time. If viewers expect a particular daypart, use a defined order and test the transition between blocks.

Choose between one continuous event and scheduled events
The weekly grid is your programming plan. A YouTube scheduled stream is an event with an upcoming watch page and potential viewer reminders; it is not itself the playlist schedule. You can carry a repeating or dayparted playlist through one continuous event, or create shorter scheduled broadcasts where separate event pages and reminders make more sense.

This reduces scheduled restarts and keeps the broadcast continuous, but YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours as an archive. Do not promise viewers a complete YouTube VOD from a single 24/7 event. If the full recording matters, record locally and plan storage and a backup process. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
Separate scheduled broadcasts
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the Manage tab to schedule a stream and reuse settings where appropriate. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt in to notifications. This gives individual broadcasts event pages but requires you to manage their start and handoff. See Manage live stream settings.

For either setup, share the schedule and relevant stream link ahead of time, and update viewers when it changes. YouTube recommends communicating the schedule and organizing archives or highlights into playlists; its live-stream promotion guidance covers sharing a stream.

YouTube recommends beginning encoder setup at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. In the Live Control Room, check the preview, confirm the watch page is accessible, verify audio and video, and keep monitoring while live. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom. If you use a backup encoder, include its bitrate in the total. Its streaming tips explain this bandwidth guidance.

Make an operating checklist
- Confirm the current playlist, block order, and next scheduled handoff against the grid.
- Check that the stream preview and public watch page work before the planned start.
- Monitor audio and video during the broadcast, particularly after switching blocks.
- Keep a local recording if a complete archive is important, and verify that the recording file is being written.
- Plan enough local storage for the bitrate, resolution, recording duration, and retention period you need; the cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a specific drive or capacity.
Check channel eligibility and rights before launch
YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and the current interface before your planned launch in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Rights clearance must cover the actual live use, not just ordinary on-demand upload. Check licenses and permissions for music and other material, including territory and term, before adding an asset to a rotation. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider.
