This gives your app an existing browser engine instead of requiring you to implement HTML and CSS rendering, JavaScript, and web standards yourself. The example below creates a small browser with an address bar and back, forward, and reload controls.
What you are building—and what you are not
This tutorial builds a Python desktop application around an embedded browser engine. It does not implement a browser engine from scratch. Qt describes its official Simple Browser example as demonstrating how to use Qt WebEngine Widgets to develop a small browser application. That example is a useful next step when you want to add tabs, downloads, and more complete window behavior: Qt for Python Simple Browser.
The small version here has one window and one web view. Its parts are deliberately simple: a QMainWindow for the application window, a navigation bar for the address field and buttons, and a QWebEngineView for the page. Qt’s QWebEnginePage holds page behavior and navigation history; the view provides the widget shown in the window. PySide6 provides Python bindings for Qt: Qt for Python documentation.
Install PySide6 and run the browser
Use a Python environment compatible with the current PySide6 package available for your operating system. Install the dependency in a virtual environment so it does not interfere with other Python projects.

sys.exit(app.exec())Press Enter in the address bar to navigate. A value such as https://example.com is treated as a URL. A dotted host such as example.com is given an HTTPS scheme. Other text is sent as a Google search query. This is a convenience rule for a minimal demo, not a complete URL-versus-search classifier; users can enter a full URL to avoid ambiguity.
How navigation and page state work
The address field calls navigate(), which converts the entered text to a QUrl and gives it to the current view with setUrl(). The view’s page then loads it. The Qt API also provides load() for loading a URL. When a page changes the current address, urlChanged updates the address field; titleChanged updates the window title.
Back and forward operate on the current page’s history, while reload requests the current page again. Those controls are connected directly to the view’s corresponding methods, keeping this first version compact. For locally held HTML, a page can use setHtml(). If that HTML includes relative links or resources, supply a base URL so the relative paths can resolve and navigation requests can be emitted. See QWebEnginePage documentation.

Extend it into a fuller browser
Add tabs and windows
For tabs, create a tab widget and put one web view in each tab. Connect the address, title, and navigation controls to the selected view rather than a single fixed view. Keep the responsibilities separated as the official Simple Browser example does: application/window management, navigation UI, tab management, web views, and page behavior. Popup requests and new-window behavior need an explicit policy; a page that opens a new window should not silently disappear or unexpectedly replace the current tab.
Add downloads
Qt WebEngine exposes a profile-level downloadRequested signal. A browser can use it to prompt the user for a destination filename and begin the transfer only after acceptance. The official Simple Browser example demonstrates a download manager flow. Treat the destination and overwrite behavior as user-facing decisions rather than saving files to an implicit location.
Choose a profile, including private browsing
WebEngine profiles govern browser data and related settings. The Simple Browser example creates a separate off-the-record QWebEngineProfile for its private window. Qt describes this mode as keeping normally persistent data such as cookies, HTTP cache, and history in memory rather than on disk. Private mode is not a promise that sites, network providers, or other system components cannot observe activity; it describes how that profile handles its normally persistent browser data.
Handle permissions and request interception deliberately
A real browser needs visible decisions for site requests such as access to capabilities, authentication, and certificate errors. The Qt example covers these areas; do not silently accept certificate errors. QWebEngineUrlRequestInterceptor can intercept, block, or modify requests before they reach the network stack, but that mechanism alone is not a complete privacy or security policy. Decide which requests your app will permit and explain consequential decisions to users.

Common problems and fixes

The import for
QWebEngineViewfails. Confirm that PySide6 installed successfully in the same environment used to run the script. Activate the virtual environment, then runpython -m pip install PySide6and retry. -
The window opens but a site does not load. Check that the address is correct and includes a scheme such as
https://. The demo’s input rule is intentionally basic; a hostname with unusual formatting may be interpreted as search text. Try entering the complete URL. -
Relative links in HTML created with
setHtml()do not resolve as expected. Provide an appropriate base URL when setting the HTML so relative links and resources have a reference location. -
A download begins without a useful save prompt, or does not start. This minimal program does not implement download handling. Add a profile-level handler for

A popup or new window is not handled the way you expect. The minimal example does not implement popup handling. Define whether such requests open a new tab or window, then follow the official Simple Browser example’s broader window and page architecture.

A certificate warning appears. Do not bypass it by accepting certificate errors automatically. Preserve the warning or implement a clear, deliberate security flow appropriate to your application.
Packaging, performance, and scope
This sample is a starting point, not a production browser specification. Before distributing it, check the operating systems you intend to support, how your chosen packaging process handles Qt WebEngine dependencies, and the licensing and redistribution terms that apply to your application and its dependencies. The available Qt material here does not establish a current platform support matrix or packaging recipe for every target, so validate those details for the specific PySide6 release and platforms you plan to ship.
Each tab or window adds browser-page work, so keep only the views your app needs and test realistic pages on the machines you intend to support. This example makes no performance guarantee. Add features incrementally and test downloads, popups, permissions, and profile behavior as separate pieces; the official Simple Browser example offers a fuller architecture to inspect rather than requiring you to build every feature into one class.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this browser to display HTML I already have?
Yes. A QWebEnginePage can load HTML with setHtml(). Pass a base URL when the HTML relies on relative links or resources.
Does this code include the features in Qt’s Simple Browser?
No. It demonstrates the core single-window navigation loop. Tabs, popup handling, downloads, multiple windows, and private profiles are extension steps described above and demonstrated in the official example.
Should I implement a rendering engine in Python instead?
Only if implementing rendering and web-platform behavior is the project itself. For an app that needs to display modern websites, embedding Qt WebEngine lets you focus on the application interface and behavior rather than recreating a browser engine.
