To make a thumbnail from a video, save a clear frame as an image, optionally edit it for the intended layout, then upload it in YouTube Studio. In Adobe Premiere, move the playhead to the frame you want and use Export Frame. You do not need a separate design app unless you want to crop, adjust, or add text.
1. Choose and save a frame from your video
- Find a useful moment. Open the footage in an editor or player that lets you inspect individual frames. Scrub through and pause on a sharp, representative moment that makes the subject clear.
- Export the still. In Premiere, open the clip or sequence and move the playhead to the chosen frame. In the Source or Program Monitor, select Export Frame, enter a filename, choose an image format and destination, then select OK. Adobe says the Export Frame icon is hidden by default; if it is missing, add it through the monitor’s Button Editor. Adobe also describes using Export mode for high-quality still formats such as DPX, TIFF, TRG, and PNG. Adobe’s Premiere instructions were updated January 21, 2026.
- Check the saved image. Open it and confirm that the selected moment is sharp and that the crop includes the subject you want viewers to see.
If you already use a different video editor, look for a command such as Export Frame, Save Frame, or Snapshot. The exact label depends on the software; the goal is to save the displayed frame as a still image.
2. Edit the image only if needed
The exported frame can be uploaded as-is. For a designed thumbnail, open the image in an editor such as Canva, crop it to the target aspect ratio, make any needed brightness or contrast adjustments, and add brief text or design elements only if they remain legible at small size. Canva documents uploading a video snapshot, editing it, and downloading a JPEG or PNG. Its page lists different size guidance from YouTube, so follow YouTube’s current requirements for the upload rather than treating a design app’s suggested dimensions as the platform’s final specification. 3. Upload the thumbnail to YouTube
Standard videos
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the video, then find the Thumbnail section.
- Select Upload file, choose the saved image, and save the video details.
YouTube may take time to display a thumbnail change. Its Thumbnail section can also show suggested options. A verified account is required to upload custom thumbnails. See YouTube’s current thumbnail guidance for eligibility and the current controls.

Shorts
Shorts thumbnail controls are changing and availability can depend on account eligibility and rollout. YouTube Help says custom thumbnail uploads for Shorts are available through YouTube Studio on a computer and require account verification. A July 24, 2026 YouTube announcement says YouTube Partner Program creators could begin uploading fully custom Shorts thumbnails, with the feature expanding over time; it also describes suggested frames on desktop and frame selection in the YouTube mobile app. Check the controls available for your account in Studio or the app. YouTube’s July 24, 2026 announcement
4. Match the image to the video format and upload limits
| Destination | Aspect ratio guidance | Dimensions and file limits stated by YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 16:9 recommended | 3840 × 2160 pixels recommended; minimum width 640 pixels. YouTube lists a 2 MB upload limit on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. |
| Short | 9:16 recommended | 2160 × 3840 pixels recommended; minimum height 640 pixels. YouTube lists a 2 MB upload limit on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. |
| Podcast thumbnail | Check the current Studio requirements | YouTube lists a 50 MB desktop upload limit. |
YouTube lists JPG and PNG among supported image formats. Device-specific file-size limits differ, so a file accepted on desktop may be too large for a mobile upload. For vertical videos, YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages; the custom image still appears in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. The YouTube Data API documentation says that when an uploaded custom thumbnail does not match required dimensions, YouTube resizes it without changing its aspect ratio, which can leave black bars. Crop to the target shape before uploading rather than relying on platform resizing. YouTube Data API thumbnail documentation
5. Keep the thumbnail representative and compliant
- Choose a frame that accurately reflects the video; do not use an image that promises content the video does not contain.
- Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as reasons a thumbnail may be rejected and a strike issued.
- A thumbnail can make the subject easier to recognize, but no particular frame or design guarantees more clicks or views.
6. Troubleshoot common problems
Export Frame is not visible in Premiere
Adobe says the Export Frame icon is not shown by default. Open the monitor’s Button Editor and add it to the controls, then try exporting again.

The image has black bars or an awkward crop
Check that the image’s aspect ratio matches the destination. Crop it to 16:9 for a standard video or 9:16 for a vertical Short before upload; YouTube may resize mismatched dimensions without changing their ratio.
YouTube rejects the file or it is too large
Use a supported JPG or PNG and check the limit for the device you are using: YouTube lists 2 MB on mobile for video thumbnails and 50 MB on desktop. Try uploading through desktop Studio if a file is within the desktop limit but exceeds the mobile one.
