A slow computer can be caused by crowded storage, too many apps running in the background, malware, outdated software, or hardware limits. The right fix depends on the cause, so start with the steps for your operating system and see whether performance changes before moving on. These checks can help, but no single method guarantees a specific speed gain.
Why is your computer so slow?
More than one issue can contribute to sluggish performance. Microsoft lists low storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations among possible causes on Windows. Apple’s guidance for a slow Mac focuses on startup-disk space, memory use, app compatibility, unused apps, and disk problems.
Start with the symptoms: a slow sign-in points you toward startup apps; sluggishness when many apps are open makes memory use worth checking; and warnings about low disk space make storage an obvious place to begin. These clues can guide your checks, but they do not prove a single cause.

Speed up a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
Microsoft recommends trying the relevant fixes because several causes can affect performance at once. Follow these steps, restarting when prompted and checking whether the problem changes.

1. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart if Windows asks. To review optional drivers, open Advanced options > Optional updates; install only updates that apply to your device. Microsoft says updates often include fixes and performance improvements, but an update is not a guaranteed speed boost. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance describes these steps.
2. Scan for malware
Malware can use processor and disk resources, leaving less capacity for other work. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. Follow any instructions Windows Security provides for detected threats, then check whether performance improves.

3. Free up disk space
Low disk space can affect performance. In Settings > System > Storage, review the files and cleanup options Windows identifies. Storage Sense can help manage temporary files, and Disk Cleanup is another option. Check what will be removed before confirming: cleanup can delete files you still want.
4. Review apps that start with Windows
Too many startup apps can slow sign-in and keep running in the background. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off apps you do not need to launch automatically. Leave essential or useful apps enabled; disabling an app at startup does not uninstall it.

5. Set realistic expectations for older hardware
Software fixes cannot remove every hardware bottleneck. Microsoft cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If the PC remains slow after relevant software and storage checks, assess the exact model and its supported upgrade options before buying a component. A compatible upgrade depends on the device.
Speed up a slow Mac
Apple’s troubleshooting advice emphasizes startup-disk space, memory use, app compatibility, and disk health. Work through the checks below and note whether a particular app or activity is associated with the slowdown.

6. Check startup-disk space
Open System Settings > General > Storage on current macOS versions to review storage recommendations and what is using space. (On older versions, storage controls may appear under About This Mac.) Apple warns, “Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space.” Delete files you no longer need or move files to another disk or external storage, then check the available space again. Moving files can free space on the startup disk; the evidence does not establish that buying external storage by itself makes the Mac faster.

Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, then select the Memory tab. Apple says, “You can use Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using.” Look for apps using substantial memory, especially when the Mac slows down, and compare their needs with the Mac’s available memory. Quit an app only if you can safely close it and do not need its unsaved work.

8. Quit unused apps and check compatibility
Close apps you are not using, then see whether the Mac responds better. If one app is consistently slow or causes trouble, check that it supports your Mac’s processor and graphics hardware. Compatibility issues may affect performance even when storage is available.
9. Check the disk with Disk Utility
If you suspect a disk problem, open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, select the relevant disk or volume, and use First Aid to verify it and try to repair problems. Follow the onscreen guidance. If errors persist, consult Apple’s instructions for your macOS version rather than repeatedly attempting repairs.

If the computer remains slow after the relevant checks, the limit may be hardware rather than a setting. Before purchasing an upgrade, verify the exact computer model, supported specifications, and installation requirements; general troubleshooting advice cannot identify a compatible part for every machine.
