To run a random song playlist as a 24/7 YouTube Live channel, use music cleared for livestreaming, put it in a shuffle-capable playback playlist, route that audio and a visual to an encoder such as OBS, then send the continuous broadcast to YouTube. The playlist handles song order; the encoder and an always-available computer or cloud service keep the live video feed running.
Before building it, resolve music rights and confirm that your YouTube account can go live. Shuffling tracks does not grant permission to broadcast them, and YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches.
1. Clear the music for livestreaming
Use tracks you own or have permission to use in a live broadcast. A consumer subscription to a music service should not be treated as broadcast permission. Keep written licenses or permissions and check whether the rights owner requires your channel to be allowlisted in Content ID.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects protected material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the material remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed music can trigger an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with your label or distributor if you plan to use copyright-protected music during a live stream. A license and a Content ID allowlist are related but separate checks; confirm both with the relevant rights holder. Its music-channel guidance is at YouTube for Artists: Going Live for Music Channels.
2. Build a playlist that can shuffle
- Collect cleared files. Keep the playlist limited to tracks whose live-broadcast rights you have verified. Maintain a record of the track, rights holder, permission, and any Content ID allowlisting requirements.
- Load them into a playback source. Use a music player or other playback method that supports playlists and shuffle, then route its audio into your streaming setup. Exact controls depend on the player; no single shuffle interface or guaranteed no-repeat behavior is established here.
- Decide what “random” should mean. Check whether the player can repeat a track before the whole set has played, reshuffle on restart, or continue from its previous position. If you need a strict no-repeat rotation or weighted selection, verify that behavior in the specific player rather than assuming ordinary shuffle provides it.
- Keep the playlist controlled. Remove unlicensed tracks and test transitions, volume consistency, and playback continuity before making the stream public.
3. Assemble the video and audio broadcast
YouTube Live receives an encoded video-and-audio stream; a radio channel still needs a visual, such as a static image or a visual loop. OBS is one option for combining the playlist audio with that scene and sending the result to YouTube. OBS’s official help portal includes basic setup guidance and an Auto-Configuration Wizard: OBS Project Help.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
- Set up the visual scene. Add a static image or visual loop that you have the right to use. Confirm it appears correctly in the encoder preview.
- Route playlist audio to the encoder. Select the playback source or system audio as the encoder’s audio input. Play a test track and confirm the encoder’s audio meter responds; prevent other system sounds from entering the broadcast if they are not intended.
- Choose the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key and server details in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If you rotate it, update the encoder too.
- Configure output settings for your connection. Use settings suitable for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and check YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen format and the encoder’s guidance. No single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value is established by the sources cited here, so do not assume one setting fits every channel or connection.
4. Enable live access and test before launch
If this is your first YouTube live stream, enable live access in advance. YouTube for Artists says to verify the account at least 24 hours before the planned broadcast. Its current instructions use the route Create, Go live, Enable, then phone-number verification; interface labels can change, so follow the linked YouTube for Artists guidance.
Run an unlisted test before announcing the channel. YouTube for Artists particularly recommends an unlisted test for high-production or high-investment streams. Check the whole path, not just the encoder preview:

- Watch YouTube’s stream status and the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame indicators.
- Test what happens if playback pauses or the connection drops, and determine how you will notice and restore service.
5. Keep the channel running continuously
With a self-hosted setup, the playback source, encoder, computer, and internet connection all need to remain available. This gives you direct control, but it also makes power, network stability, software behavior, and monitoring your responsibility. An always-on broadcast is not guaranteed just because it starts successfully.
OBS says rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a connection unable to sustain the configured bitrate. It drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. If the counter rises and the connection indicator turns yellow or red, check the network and selected bitrate; OBS also points users to its connection troubleshooting and Auto-Configuration Wizard in the OBS Help Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can YouTube interrupt a live stream even if I have a music license?
Yes. YouTube says a licensed track may still trigger an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID.
Does shuffle guarantee that no song repeats until every track has played?
Not necessarily. Repeat behavior depends on the playback method; test the specific player’s shuffle behavior before relying on a no-repeat rotation.
Can I use the same stream key after changing my playlist?
Changing playlist contents does not inherently require a new key. Keep the key private, and update the encoder if you rotate or replace it in YouTube Studio.
