To make a portrait photo landscape, change its composition—not its rotation. Crop to a wide aspect ratio if you can lose some of the top and bottom, or expand the canvas and fill the added space if the whole original photo must remain visible. A designed background is a third option when you want to preserve the image without asking software to invent scenery.
Choose the right way to make the image landscape
Orientation and composition are different. Rotating a portrait photo changes which way it faces; it does not create a wide composition. The right method depends on whether you need to keep the entire original image and how natural the added or rearranged space should look.

Pick the destination’s aspect ratio first—for example, the ratio required by a banner or social placement. Do not stretch the image unevenly to make it wide; that distorts the subject rather than reframing the photo.

Cropping is the most direct route to a landscape aspect ratio. In an editor’s crop tool, select the required wide ratio, then reposition the frame so the face and essential context remain visible. Google Photos documents aspect-ratio cropping, while Lightroom provides aspect-ratio and crop-orientation controls. - Open the photo in an editor and choose its crop tool.
- Select the landscape ratio required by the destination.
- Move the crop frame to keep the subject’s face and important context inside it.
- Check all four edges for accidentally cut-off details, then save a copy if you want to retain the uncropped original.
This method does not add missing image content: anything outside the crop is discarded. If the full portrait must remain visible, use canvas expansion or a designed background instead.

Expand the canvas when the full portrait must remain
Canvas expansion creates room around the original photo and fills the new area. Adobe describes this approach for adapting a frame to formats such as social crops and banners. The added surroundings are generated or filled pixels, not recovered camera capture, so a plausible-looking result cannot prove what was actually outside the original photograph. In Lightroom desktop
- Open the photo and choose Crop, Rotate, Geometry.
- Enable Expand, then extend the frame or choose an aspect ratio.
- Select Firefly Fill & Expand or Content-Aware Fill.
- Generate the fill, inspect the available options, and keep the result that works best.
Adobe recommends expanding one edge at a time to maximize the quality of the generated area. The precise controls and feature availability can depend on the product and platform; check the instructions for the version you use.

Use a designed background for predictable results
If you want to keep every part of the portrait but avoid generated scenery, place the original photo on a wider canvas. Fill the sides with a solid color, a simple graphic treatment, or a blurred, enlarged copy of the same image. This keeps the source photo intact and gives you direct control over the subject’s placement, though the result is visibly designed rather than a seamless continuation of the scene.

Inspect expanded images before using them
Generative fill can work especially well when the existing background is soft and out of focus, because there is less complex detail to continue. Adobe instructor Arabela Espinoza describes that kind of background as a strong fit for Firefly expansion in Adobe’s tutorial. Busy textures, architecture, reflections, or precise patterns can be harder to extend convincingly.

- Review the join between the original photo and the added area at full size.
- Check faces, hands, hair, architecture, repeated patterns, and reflections for visible distortions.
- Look for text-like marks or other details that were not in the source image.
- Compare available variations instead of accepting the first result automatically.
- Keep the original file: generated surroundings are an edit, not evidence of what the camera captured.
