If you only need a finished podcast episode to become available at a chosen time, upload it to YouTube Studio and schedule its publication. If viewers must watch it as a live event, schedule a live stream and use an encoder to send the episode file: scheduling the event alone does not start playback of a chosen video.

Choose the right way to publish the episode

Option What happens at the chosen time Best for What you need
Scheduled video The uploaded video becomes public An episode that does not need to appear live Upload and schedule it in YouTube Studio
Premiere A shared, live-style presentation of an uploaded video A communal viewing experience, where the option is available Choose the current Premiere options in Studio
Scheduled live stream The event is scheduled, but an encoder must supply the episode feed An episode presented as an actual live stream with a live watch page YouTube Live Control Room and an encoder configured to play the file

YouTube treats these as different workflows. A scheduled video is simplest when the goal is simply to release an episode at a particular time. A Premiere is a presentation option for an uploaded video; it is not an encoder-driven live stream. For an actual live stream, YouTube creates the event, while your encoder provides the audio and video. YouTube’s scheduled publishing guidance and its encoder setup instructions explain the distinction.

Schedule a finished episode as a regular YouTube video

  1. Upload the finished episode in YouTube Studio.
  2. Complete the episode details, including its title, description, thumbnail, and audience settings.
  3. In the visibility and scheduling controls, select the publication date and time, check the time zone, and schedule the video.
  4. Confirm the scheduled status and share the watch page if appropriate.

YouTube makes a scheduled video public at the selected time. The date shown on its public watch page is based on Pacific Time, so it may differ from the date shown in Studio for someone scheduling from a time zone ahead of Pacific Time. Check the displayed date as well as the selected time zone when planning an international release. YouTube Help: Schedule video publish time.

Schedule a live stream that plays the episode

Use this workflow when the audience needs a live-stream watch page or the episode must be presented as a live event. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not, by itself, select or start the episode file. Your encoder or production setup must play the recording and continuously send its output to YouTube.

  1. Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, and schedule a stream. You can create a stream or reuse previous stream settings. Set its visibility and metadata, then confirm the event page and timing. Viewers may be able to opt into a reminder. See YouTube’s encoder stream setup guide.
  2. Connect an encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder or production software. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a screenshot.
  3. Configure episode playback. Choose the podcast video file in the encoder or production setup and configure playback to begin at the intended time. Make sure that the encoder continues sending the episode’s audio and video to YouTube for its full duration.
  4. Check start and stop behavior. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let an encoder control when a stream starts or stops. They control the stream, not playback of a selected media file; the encoder still needs to provide the episode feed. Review YouTube’s live stream settings.
  5. Preview before the event. Check the encoder preview in Live Control Room and confirm the correct episode, audio, image, and overlays are reaching YouTube.
  6. End the stream cleanly. Stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room when playback is finished.

Prepare the encoder and protect the release

Build in setup and testing time rather than relying on a last-minute start. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, then checking the preview. Those are YouTube operational recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will start successfully. Its streaming tips also recommend testing and monitoring the stream.

  • Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the event’s visibility is right for its intended audience.
  • Test the exact episode file and encoder output, including audio levels, movement, overlays, and any transitions.
  • Verify the event date, time zone, encoder start behavior, and whether the stream should stop automatically.
  • Choose settings that fit the available upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion; consult its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for supported settings, then test with representative audio and video.
  • Keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. An online archive is not a substitute for your own copy. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
  • Check that you have the rights needed for the episode and any music, clips, or other material in it. Scheduling or streaming does not grant permission to use copyrighted content.

Common problems and fixes

  • The event is scheduled, but the episode does not play. Scheduling the event does not launch a media file. Configure the encoder or production software to play the episode and send its output.
  • The event page is available, but viewers see no video. Confirm the encoder is connected with the correct stream URL and key, is sending a signal, and has been started. Check the Live Control Room preview.
  • The episode starts at the wrong time. Recheck the scheduled date, selected time zone, and encoder playback start time. Account for YouTube’s Pacific Time basis for the date displayed on a public scheduled-video watch page.
  • The stream starts, but audio or video is poor or unstable. Test the exact file and encoder settings, check the upload connection, and select settings appropriate to its capacity. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance rather than assuming a preset fits every connection.
  • The stream does not stop when expected. Check the encoder’s stop behavior and YouTube’s auto-stop setting, then end the event in Live Control Room if needed.
  • The live archive is missing or incomplete. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording and do not rely on the platform archive as the only copy.
