To livestream a podcast episode on YouTube with its artwork, create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, then send a video feed that displays the artwork—most often using streaming encoder software. Add your audio, connect the encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the event. YouTube does not automatically turn podcast cover art or an MP3 into a livestream.
Understand the two kinds of podcast artwork on YouTube
YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist and each episode as a video. An MP3 file by itself is not a YouTube podcast episode; the episode needs to be published as a video. You can make an audio-led episode video by pairing its audio with a still image or designed visual.
There are two separate image placements to prepare:
- Podcast playlist artwork: square, with YouTube recommending 1280 × 1280 pixels. YouTube’s podcast instructions are at Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
- Live event or replay thumbnail: generally a 16:9 video thumbnail. YouTube’s thumbnail guidance says podcast playlists should use a 1:1 image rather than the 16:9 ratio suggested for videos. See Add custom thumbnails on YouTube for supported formats and current file limits.
You can also put the episode artwork inside the actual stream as its visual. That requires a video source—such as a still image in an encoder—not just an audio file or a podcast playlist cover.

Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements in Get started with live streaming before scheduling an event, since platform rules can change.
Choose a streaming method

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming. For a podcast with a still visual and external audio gear, the encoder route gives you more control. You do not need expensive equipment to begin; a microphone is optional, though it can be useful for spoken-word audio. Set up the live event and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a new stream or schedule one for later. Add the event title, description, visibility, and other details that suit the episode.
- Prepare the artwork visual in your encoder. Add the episode image as the video source, or use a layout that includes the artwork. Connect the podcast audio source, such as your microphone or audio interface. The cover image used for the podcast playlist is not automatically inserted into the live feed.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, find the connection details, then enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or share it with others. See Manage live stream settings.
- Set the encoder’s video and audio inputs. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your equipment and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the appropriate values; there is no single bitrate that fits every combination of resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the artwork appears as intended and that the audio is present at a usable level. Once the preview and stream health look right in Live Control Room, start the event there when you are ready for viewers.
Test audio, visuals, and connection before the episode
- Run a test using audio and movement similar to what the actual event will contain. Listen for distortion, clipping, low volume, noise, or delay between audio and video.
- Check that the artwork is legible in the stream layout and that any added text is not obscured by interface elements.
- Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. Leave headroom above the selected stream bitrate so ordinary connection variation does not immediately destabilize the broadcast.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators during the event. YouTube’s guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.
Keep the episode and artwork within YouTube rules
Use audio, images, music, and other material you have the rights to use. A still image does not make copyrighted podcast audio permissible. If you plan to publish the livestream replay as an episode, make sure the finished video and its thumbnail are appropriate for that use as well. YouTube’s podcast setup and thumbnail instructions explain the distinct playlist and video placements; check those help pages for current specifications.
