To show every edge of a photo on your phone wallpaper, place it on a taller portrait canvas, fill the extra space with a background or margins, save a copy, and set that copy as your wallpaper. A phone’s standard wallpaper preview may crop a photo to fill the screen; adding canvas space preserves the original without stretching it.
Why your phone crops or zooms in on a wallpaper
A photo and a phone screen often have different aspect ratios—the relationship between an image’s width and height. When a wallpaper fills the display, the phone may enlarge the photo and cut off its edges. This is especially noticeable with a landscape image on a tall portrait screen.
There are two different goals: filling the screen edge to edge, or keeping the entire original photo visible. If their shapes differ, you generally cannot do both without changing the image’s proportions. Stretching the photo to fill the screen distorts people and objects; adding space around it preserves the photo instead.
Make the whole photo fit without cropping
- Open an image editor that can resize the canvas or add borders. You do not need a particular paid app; the essential feature is adding space around the photo.
- Create a portrait canvas suited to the phone’s screen. If the photo is landscape or not as tall as the canvas, scale it down proportionally until all its edges fit inside.
- Choose how to fill the extra space. Use a solid color, a soft background, or another deliberate design. Do not stretch the photo to cover the added area.
- Save the result as a new copy. This keeps the original photo unchanged.
- Set the copy as wallpaper using your phone’s settings, then check the preview. A phone may still apply a small crop or movement effect, so adjust the positioning if the preview allows it.

Set the prepared photo as wallpaper
iPhone
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, then choose Photos.
- Select the prepared image and tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it for both screens, or choose Customize Home Screen to give the Home Screen a separate treatment.
Apple’s guide documents these choices, but does not describe a universal switch that makes every original photo fit without cropping. Menu wording can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s iPhone wallpaper instructions.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open the wallpaper customization flow and choose the image from Gallery.
- Drag to reposition the image and pinch to zoom in or out in the preview.
- Apply it to the screen you want.
Samsung says its normal wallpaper flow crops the image to fit the screen and recommends not cropping the photo beforehand. That advice suits edge-to-edge wallpapers; if you need every edge of the original to remain visible, prepare a canvas first. Samsung also documents Frame or Effect options for One UI 6.1 or later; availability depends on the device and software. See Samsung’s Galaxy wallpaper instructions.

Google Pixel
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpapers & style > More wallpapers > Change wallpaper > Choose a photo.
- Select the prepared image, choose Lock screen or Home screen, and apply it.
Pixel wallpaper effects vary by model: Google lists Cinematic effects for Pixel 6 and later, and shape or weather effects for Pixel 9a and later. These are optional visual effects, not a general control to prevent cropping. See Google Pixel’s wallpaper instructions.

What wallpaper size should you use?
There is no single supported pixel resolution established here for every phone. Models, software versions, and wallpaper previews differ, and the official setup guides do not provide one current dimensions table covering all devices. For precise edge-to-edge framing, check the specifications for your exact phone and use the wallpaper preview. For preserving every edge of a differently shaped photo, matching the phone’s portrait proportions is not enough by itself—you need added canvas space.

Fix common wallpaper problems
The wallpaper is still zoomed in
Check the preview for zoom or reposition controls. On Galaxy phones, Samsung documents dragging and pinching in the wallpaper flow. If the complete photo must remain visible and the preview still removes its edges, add more canvas around the photo and set the revised copy.
The photo looks stretched
Return to the original and resize it proportionally on a larger canvas. Fill the uncovered area with a background or margins rather than changing the photo’s width and height independently.

The Home Screen looks different from the Lock Screen
Check whether the two screens are linked or configured separately. Apple offers a wallpaper pair or Home Screen customization; Pixel’s documented flow lets you choose Lock screen or Home screen. Review each screen’s preview and apply the intended image or treatment.
