To keep recorded sermons playing on YouTube Live, send them through an encoder that loops a sermon file or playlist. A church can run the free OBS Studio software on a computer that stays powered on and connected, or use a cloud service to play uploaded recordings without leaving a church computer running. In either case, YouTube receives a live feed—not a finished video archive—so plan separately for preserving and organizing individual sermons.
Can you loop recorded sermons on YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube Live accepts a feed from an encoder, and that feed can contain prerecorded video. OBS Studio can repeat a local video file or play a playlist; YouTube also lists cloud tools for continuous prerecorded streaming. The key distinction is that the encoder is sending a live feed made from recordings, rather than uploading each sermon as a normal YouTube video.
A 24/7 feed is not guaranteed to become one complete archive: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Decide how viewers will find specific sermons and how the church will retain recordings outside that continuous stream.

Before you start
- Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned start. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guide.
- Check permissions. Make sure the church has permission to rebroadcast the sermon recordings and every included element, such as music, readings, photographs or video clips. Owning a recording does not by itself establish permission to broadcast all its contents.
- Prepare the program. Choose one sermon to repeat or arrange several recordings in sequence. Review the files from beginning to end, including their audio, transitions and any credits or material that should not be broadcast.
- Check equipment you already have. For OBS, you need a suitable computer, a reliable internet connection and enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen stream settings. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.
Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live. Create or schedule a stream and set its title, description, visibility and other details for the church’s audience.
- Use YouTube’s encoder setup to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter these in the encoder you choose. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to the channel. Do not post it publicly or include it in a public recording.
- Keep the YouTube control room open while testing. Confirm that the incoming video appears in the preview and check stream health before making the feed public or relying on it unattended.
YouTube’s interface and eligibility requirements can change. Follow the current prompts in Studio and the official encoder instructions if labels differ.

Run a continuous sermon playlist with OBS
OBS runs on the church’s computer, so that machine, its power and its internet connection must remain available while the stream is on. OBS’s source controls support looping a single media file or looping a playlist with a VLC Video source. Consult the OBS Project Media Sources guide for the current controls.
Option 1: Repeat one sermon
- Install and open OBS Studio on the computer that will run the stream.
- In the scene where the broadcast will run, add a Media Source and select the sermon video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties so playback starts again when the file ends. Check any restart or visibility options against the desired behavior, then confirm the sermon plays with audible sound in the OBS preview.
Option 2: Play several sermons in sequence
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the sermon files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist so OBS returns to the beginning after the final item.
- Preview the full sequence, including the transition between files and the return to the first sermon. If a file is missing, unsupported or silent, fix it before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, or enter YouTube’s server and stream key using the details from Studio.
- Set the output video and audio configuration in OBS (see the settings section below). Start the feed from OBS, then verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio.
- When the preview is correct, start the live stream in YouTube Studio if its control room prompts you to do so. Confirm the public watch page works as intended.
Test the actual sermon audio and video—not just a blank scene or a short sample. Assign someone to check the dashboard periodically; OBS cannot keep streaming through a power loss, computer shutdown or failed local connection.
Choose video and audio settings the connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its settings guide lists 720p at 30 frames per second with a recommended video bitrate of 2 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not a requirement to stream at 720p: choose a resolution and bitrate that suit the source files and sustained upload speed.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the current recommendations. Avoid selecting a higher bitrate than the church’s connection can reliably upload. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving upload headroom (20% recommended), testing before the stream and monitoring the incoming feed. Check the actual preview, stream-health indicators, sermon framing and intelligibility before launch.
Use a cloud service instead of leaving a computer running
A cloud continuous-stream service plays uploaded recordings on a provider’s remote system and sends the feed to YouTube. The church still needs internet access to set up and manage the stream, and remains dependent on the provider, the uploaded media, valid YouTube credentials and YouTube itself. Check a provider’s current terms, limits and pricing before relying on it; a vendor’s workflow description is not independent evidence of uptime or reliability.

Plan for archives, rights and ongoing operation
Keep individual sermons findable
Because YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, do not assume an uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce one complete archive. Keep the original sermon files and consider uploading individual sermons separately so viewers can locate them and the church has a clear record of each message.
Review copyright and channel policy
Check permissions for all sermon content before broadcasting, including music and third-party material. A livestream is still a public broadcast of that material. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist; it does not replace permission from rights holders or YouTube’s rules.

Assign a person to monitor the feed
Even a loop intended to run continuously needs an owner. Check YouTube’s live dashboard and stream health, listen for audio problems, and confirm the playlist is advancing as expected. A local OBS setup depends on the church’s equipment and connection; a cloud setup depends on the provider as well as the source files and YouTube connection.

- You cannot start a livestream: Verify the channel and confirm live streaming is enabled; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check Studio for any channel restriction notices.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is using the correct stream destination and current key, and that the computer is online. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: Check sustained upload capacity and lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed. Leave the upload headroom YouTube recommends, then test again and inspect stream health.
- The sermon plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and check Loop. For a multi-file program, confirm the correct VLC playlist is loaded and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- There is no sound or the picture is wrong: Preview the actual source in OBS, check audio meters and source configuration, and verify the incoming YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.
- The live feed is interrupted: For OBS, check power, the computer, the encoder and local internet, then restart the feed and verify it in Studio. For a cloud service, check its dashboard, uploaded media and YouTube connection; recovery behavior depends on the provider.
Costs and practical choice
If the church already has a suitable computer, OBS avoids buying a dedicated encoder, but the local setup still depends on that computer, power and internet. A cloud service avoids keeping the local computer online but adds a recurring or time-limited service cost and provider dependence. There is no universal cheaper or more reliable choice: compare the church’s real equipment and connection needs with the provider’s current plan limits and terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the sermon have to be recorded in OBS?
No. OBS can use an existing video file as a Media Source; the recording does not have to originate in OBS.
Can a small church stream only one sermon repeatedly?
Yes. Add that file as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop, or upload it to a cloud service configured to repeat it.
