To stream a church’s prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube, prepare the videos with subtitles, loop one file or a playlist in OBS Studio, connect OBS to YouTube Live with a stream key, and test the result before relying on it. For words every viewer can see, render the SRT subtitles into the video image first. OBS documents looping local media and playlists, but its documentation does not establish that it will automatically find a separate SRT sidecar file.

Choose how subtitles should reach viewers

An SRT file contains timed text, but a video player’s subtitle track and YouTube Live’s caption feed are different things. Decide which result the church needs before configuring the stream.

Open captions: words burned into the picture

If the priority is that every viewer sees the words, render the subtitles onto the video before adding it to OBS. The text then appears as part of the picture; viewers cannot turn it off or select it as a separate caption track. Check timing and legibility throughout the video, including at the beginning, middle, and end.

Closed captions: a separate, selectable track

YouTube says live captions must be sent to YouTube. Its documented options include captions embedded as EIA 608/CEA 708 or compatible caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST; its guide says it currently supports one caption track. These requirements do not establish that a plain SRT sidecar can be uploaded as a live caption feed through OBS. If selectable live captions are essential, use a compatible caption-delivery workflow and verify it in a test stream. YouTube’s live caption requirements

Subtitle tracks inside the media

OBS’s VLC Video source exposes a Subtitles Enabled checkbox and a Subtitle Track selector. That is distinct from confirming that OBS will automatically detect a separate .srt file next to a video. Test the church’s actual files in the installed setup rather than assuming a sidecar will load. OBS Media Sources documentation

Prepare and check the church’s files

  1. Match each video to its subtitle file. Confirm which SRT belongs with which recording, and play each video with its intended audio.
  2. Check subtitle timing. Review the opening, a middle section, and the ending for missing, mistimed, or hard-to-read lines.
  3. Choose the caption method. Render subtitles into the picture for reliably visible text, or arrange a supported live-caption workflow if viewers need a selectable track.
  4. Check the whole rotation. For a playlist, confirm the order, audio levels, framing, and transitions between clips. These are recommended local checks, not a claim that any particular church files have been tested.

Set up continuous playback in OBS

Loop one video

  1. Open OBS Studio and add a scene for the church stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
  3. Select the local video file. Enable Loop in the source properties to repeat it.
  4. Confirm the video fits the scene and that its audio is present. If subtitles must be visible to all viewers, use the version with subtitles already rendered into the picture.

OBS documents looping for a local Media Source; that setting repeats media playback, but by itself does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast or continuous archival availability.

Loop an ordered playlist

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source.
  3. Add the church’s video files to its playlist in the intended order.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle off if the sequence matters.
  5. If the media exposes a subtitle track, enable subtitles and select the intended track. Verify the exact video/SRT combination locally; the OBS documentation does not confirm automatic loading of a separate SRT sidecar.

See OBS’s Media Sources guide for the documented source controls.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before preparing a scheduled stream. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
  2. Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to create or select the stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly. YouTube encoder setup
  3. Prefer RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Follow the ingest details shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube encoder settings
  4. Start a test and check YouTube’s preview. Before a public broadcast, confirm that YouTube receives the picture and audio and that the intended subtitles appear or arrive through the chosen caption route.

Test before relying on the stream

Run an unlisted or private test and check the complete playback path, not just the OBS preview. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement, using the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips

What to do when something fails

Symptom Likely check What to do
The video loops, but subtitles are missing The subtitles may be a separate SRT sidecar that OBS has not loaded. Use a video with subtitles rendered into the picture, or test the media’s available subtitle-track controls in VLC Video. Do not assume sidecar detection.
Viewers cannot turn subtitles on Text rendered into the picture is open-caption text, not a selectable caption track. If selectable captions are required, configure a YouTube-supported embedded 608/708 or HTTP caption-software workflow and verify it separately.
A VLC Video source is unavailable or does not work VLC may not be installed, or the VLC and OBS architectures may not match. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then recheck the source.
YouTube does not receive the encoder stream Check channel eligibility, the stream URL and key, and the ingest connection. Confirm the key and URL in YouTube Studio and OBS, and use RTMPS where available.
The broadcast looks fine in OBS but not on the watch page The viewer-facing stream, caption delivery, archive, or watch-page access may not match the local preview. Use the Live Control Room preview and a private or unlisted test to inspect the YouTube playback path and settings.
