A coding agent can describe its work in customer-friendly language—but the explanation should come after implementation and be checked against the actual diff. The reusable skill below gives the agent a clear workflow: inspect what changed, explain why it matters, and state any customer action without inventing benefits.
What this skill is for
This is a workflow skill: reusable instructions that guide an agent through a preferred process. It does not make every code change inherently easier to understand; it tells the agent how to turn completed implementation work into a concise customer update. OpenAI describes Codex skills as bundles of instructions, resources, and scripts that help Codex follow workflows and team preferences. A skill may be explicitly requested or selected automatically based on the task (OpenAI’s Codex app announcement).
Use it only when there is a finished change to inspect. Drafting a customer explanation before the code is complete risks promising behavior that never shipped. Codex’s described review workflow lets users inspect changes in a thread, comment on the diff, and open it in an editor, making that diff a useful factual check before sending the update.
How do I write a coding-agent skill that explains code changes in plain English?
Put the instructions where the agent can discover them, following the conventions for your particular agent. The sample below is platform-neutral wording, not a claim that one file location works in every coding tool. Adapt the filename and installation location to the tool you use.

# Customer change explanation
## When to use
After implementation work is complete and the resulting changes can be inspected. Use only for a request that changed, fixed, or added code or product behavior. Do not use for general questions, planning without implementation, or unrelated conversation.
## Instructions
1. Inspect the completed change or diff before writing. If you cannot inspect it, say that you cannot verify the implementation; do not guess what changed.
2. Write a short update for the customer, not for another developer. Use plain language and explain the observable behavior, not internal architecture, unless a technical detail is necessary for the customer to act.
3. Separate:
- What changed: the behavior or issue addressed, supported by the diff.
- Why it matters: a customer impact only when the change supports that claim.
- What the customer needs to do: include a next step only if one is required.
4. Preserve important limitations, conditions, and behavior changes. Do not imply that a fix covers cases the implementation does not cover.
5. Do not claim a change was tested, deployed, or released unless the available evidence establishes that status. Do not include internal deliberation, speculative benefits, or implementation details that do not help the customer.
6. If the diff is ambiguous, incomplete, or unrelated to the requested outcome, ask for clarification or state the uncertainty instead of filling gaps.
## Output format
**What changed:** [One or two plain-language sentences.]
**What you need to do:** [A concrete action, or “No action is needed.” only when that is established.]
The skill’s boundaries matter as much as its tone. In particular, it distinguishes a change visible in code from a claim about testing, release status, or customer impact. If your process does not establish one of those facts, the agent should not assert it.
How to check whether the explanation is accurate
Read the generated update alongside the completed diff. Treat each sentence as a claim that needs support: the described behavior should exist in the change, the stated impact should follow from that behavior, and any required customer action should be real. Translate jargon without changing the meaning, and retain conditions or limitations that could affect the customer.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Fidelity: Can you point to the changed code or behavior that supports each claim?
- Comprehension: Could the intended customer understand the wording without needing an explanation of internal code?
- Completeness: Does it include material behavior changes, limitations, and required next steps without narrating implementation trivia?
- Evidence: Does it avoid unsupported claims about tests, deployment, release, or outcomes?
These are practical review criteria, not published measurements of customer comprehension. The sources cited here do not establish that a customer-explanation skill improves understanding or reduces support work.
Test triggering separately from writing quality
A skill can produce a good explanation when invoked and still fail in practice if it runs on the wrong tasks—or does not run on the right ones. Anthropic’s guidance on skill authoring treats evaluation and trigger tuning as separate concerns. Its article notes that overly broad descriptions can prompt false triggers, while overly narrow descriptions can prevent appropriate triggering (Anthropic, “Improving skill-creator: Test, measure, and refine Agent Skills,” March 3, 2026).

- Positive examples: A completed bug fix, feature, or other implementation change that needs a customer update.
- Negative examples: A question about code with no implementation, a plan that has not been carried out, or an unrelated request.
Run representative implementation tasks both with the skill and without it. Compare whether the output is more accurate, understandable, and appropriately complete—not simply longer. Anthropic recommends evals, benchmarks, and iterative refinement for skills; its article says, “Skill-creator now helps you write evals, run benchmarks, and keep your skills working as models evolve.” Re-run the same representative checks when you revise the instructions or change the underlying agent or model.

OpenAI reported using image-generation and web-game-development skills to build an example game from one initial prompt, a vendor illustration involving more than 7 million tokens. That figure concerns a different task; it is not a benchmark for customer updates or evidence that this skill works (OpenAI’s Codex app announcement).

Anthropic characterizes a skill file as an implementation plan and distinguishes skills that encode a preferred workflow from those intended to improve a capability the base model cannot reliably perform. A customer-update skill fits the workflow category unless testing demonstrates a capability improvement. A community repository also offers an example of user-facing writing guidance—keep it relevant, state results and decisions directly, and omit internal deliberation—but that is a community example, not an official platform rule (AnastasiyaW community repository).
