You can configure Windows to reopen OBS after a restart and have OBS attempt to start streaming, but that does not guarantee the same YouTube broadcast will resume or become live for viewers. Schedule or prepare the event in YouTube Studio, set its encoder auto-start behavior deliberately, launch OBS with --startstreaming, and test the complete recovery process on the church’s actual setup.
What automatic recovery can—and cannot—do
There are two separate jobs: Windows must start OBS after the PC restarts, and YouTube must make the intended broadcast live when OBS sends its feed. An open OBS window or an encoder that appears to be streaming does not by itself prove that viewers can watch the correct event. Check YouTube’s live status as part of recovery.
YouTube documents scheduled events, stream keys, and encoder auto-start and auto-stop settings. It does not promise that a computer reboot will resume the exact same broadcast automatically. Treat this configuration as an attempt to relaunch and reconnect, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service, the same URL, or recovery from every power or network failure. Prepare the YouTube broadcast first

In YouTube Studio, schedule the sermon broadcast or prepare the event you intend to use. Scheduled streams can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers may choose “Notify me.”

Choose the event’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior deliberately. With auto-start enabled, starting the encoder can start the viewer-facing broadcast; without it, a separate go-live action may be required. YouTube says “Reuse settings” carries those selections to a new stream, so check them when creating or reusing an event. Connect OBS to the correct YouTube account and event. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Make OBS start streaming after Windows starts
OBS community guidance describes adding --startstreaming after the OBS executable in a shortcut’s target, then arranging for Windows to launch that shortcut at startup. This is community guidance rather than an official guarantee for every OBS version, Windows configuration, or YouTube event.

Find the OBS executable or an existing OBS shortcut. In the shortcut’s Properties, add a space followed by

For a simple setup, place that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder so OBS launches when the relevant user signs in. Alternatively, create a Task Scheduler task that launches the shortcut or executable at startup. Startup-folder launch is simpler; Task Scheduler provides more control over the trigger and conditions, but the exact configuration depends on the church PC and who signs in.

Confirm the account used for startup has access to OBS, its scenes and media, audio/video devices, and the intended YouTube connection. If the task runs under a different account or session than the one used to set up OBS, verify the actual behavior rather than assuming its saved configuration and devices will be available.
The OBS forum discussion describing this approach also warns that OBS may start before the network equipment or internet connection is ready. If its first connection attempt fails, automatic reconnect may not be enough. A delayed or connectivity-aware launch may help, but there is no universal delay or tested script established here. Reduce the chance that an update interrupts worship
Use Windows restart scheduling as prevention, and OBS startup as a backup. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when the device is not in use and lets users schedule a restart or set active hours. Set active hours to cover setup, worship, and teardown, then install updates and perform planned restarts outside that window. Active hours reduce automatic restarts during the hours the device is used; they do not replace installing updates. Pausing updates is temporary, not a permanent solution. Church computers managed through Group Policy or mobile-device management may have additional restart controls. Check Microsoft’s documented applicability for the installed Windows edition and version before using a policy or old registry recipe: Microsoft marks some restart policies as legacy or inapplicable to Windows 11. Do not disable updates indefinitely.
Rehearse recovery and verify the viewer-facing result

Use the actual church computer, YouTube account, scheduled-event workflow, internet connection, audio, and video sources. Do not rely on a test made only on a different PC or account.

Arrange a controlled restart outside service time. Confirm Windows starts the expected user session and OBS opens with the intended scene and sources.

Check that OBS is sending data to YouTube, then separately confirm in YouTube Studio that the intended event is live to viewers. If possible, have another person check the public viewing page.

Repeat with the network unavailable during startup, if practical, to learn what happens on this setup. Record the manual recovery steps and make sure a volunteer knows how to select the right event and start it if automation does not succeed.
Troubleshooting: when the sermon does not return live

OBS opens but does not stream. Check that
--startstreamingis in the shortcut target after the executable path, and that Windows launched the shortcut or task you edited. -
OBS says it is streaming, but viewers cannot watch. Verify the selected YouTube event and its live state in YouTube Studio. Encoder data and a viewer-facing live broadcast are distinct states; check the event’s auto-start setting and use the separate go-live action if that setup requires it.

OBS cannot connect after a restart. The network may not have been ready when OBS launched. Restore connectivity, retry the connection, and consider a delayed or network-aware startup after testing it on the church PC.

The wrong event or stream receives the feed. Recheck the account, event, and stream key in OBS and YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.

The scheduled event has stopped or will not continue. YouTube user reports differ on what happens after a stream stops or disconnects. Do not assume a stopped event can always be continued automatically; check its current state and have a volunteer follow the manual recovery path.
