You can make a quick purple-looking light by covering a torch with colored film, but that does not make it a dependable ultraviolet source. For fluorescence that needs genuine UV-A, use a purpose-made UV-A lamp or flashlight with its wavelength stated, or a compatible fluorescent blacklight tube.
What counts as a black light?
A black light is generally a longwave ultraviolet-A (UV-A) source. The CDC defines UV-A as 315–400 nm, UV-B as 280–315 nm, and UV-C as 100–280 nm (CDC overview of non-ionizing radiation). Traditional fluorescent blacklight bulbs peak near mercury’s 365 nm line, according to the Fluorescent Mineral Society. A blacklight-blue fluorescent tube uses a filter in its glass to suppress much of the visible light.
That is different from a purple-looking effect made by filtering a regular torch. It is also different from a germicidal UVC lamp: low-pressure mercury germicidal bulbs mainly emit at 254 nm, a UVC wavelength, and are not blacklight substitutes.

The sources cited here do not provide controlled product tests comparing 365 nm and 395 nm lights, so there is no basis for naming one wavelength a universal winner. Compare the actual product specifications and intended use.

Make a purple-looking torch effect with colored film
National Science Week Australia describes a simple colored-film activity. The layers absorb much of a torch’s visible output and pass blue and purple visible light; they do not establish a particular UV-A output (National Science Week Australia’s Build a Blacklight activity).
What you need
- A bright LED torch
- Two pieces of purple cellophane and one piece of blue cellophane
- Scissors and a rubber band
Steps
- Cut pieces of cellophane large enough to cover the torch’s light opening.
- Layer two purple pieces and one blue piece over the opening.
- Secure the layers with a rubber band, keeping the material clear of controls and any area that needs to stay uncovered.
- Turn on the torch and use it as a purple/blue visible-light effect. Do not treat it as a measured or reliable UV-A source.
The same activity suggests a phone torch with clear tape colored using blue and purple permanent markers. Put the marker ink on the tape, not on the phone. It also advises adult supervision for children. The activity does not report a measured spectrum or output for either colored-layer method.

Use a real UV-A source for UV-driven fluorescence
For a source intended to make fluorescent materials respond to ultraviolet light, use a purpose-made UV-A LED flashlight or lamp that states its wavelength, or a fluorescent blacklight tube in a compatible fixture. Near 365 nm is close to the traditional fluorescent blacklight line described by the Fluorescent Mineral Society. With a tube, the blacklight-blue filter is built into the tube glass and limits visible output. With an LED, filtering depends on the design and is often unnecessary; a compatible optional filter may reduce visible spill.
- Wavelength: Check that the product specifies a UV-A wavelength rather than relying on a purple appearance.
- Visible spill: Consider how much visible violet light the design emits and whether filtering matters for your use.
- Coverage: Compare the illuminated area with the size and distance of the target you want to inspect or demonstrate.
- Power and fit: Check battery or power requirements and, for a tube, verify the fixture compatibility.
- Safety information: Follow the particular product’s operating instructions; safety depends on its measured output.
Check whether a material fluoresces
Use a fluorescent target rather than judging the source by its color alone. UCAR’s classroom activity uses tonic water: quinine absorbs UV energy and re-emits visible light, making the liquid glow blue (UCAR tonic-water activity).

- Place tonic water in a clear cup and expose it to the blacklight.
- If comparing a screen or material, place it between the light and a second cup.
- Compare the cups under the same setup. Treat the difference in glow as a qualitative observation, not a calibrated measurement.
Other materials suggested for testing include highlighter ink, fluorescent paints, cosmetics, and glow-in-the-dark toys. Different materials respond differently, and a lack of visible glow does not by itself establish the lamp’s wavelength or output.

UV-A is ultraviolet radiation, not harmless visible light. The CDC says UV-A penetrates deeper into skin than UV-B, and the FDA states that both UVA and UVB can damage skin. Do not stare into a UV-A source or point it at another person’s eyes.

Do not use a UVC or germicidal lamp in place of a black light. The FDA warns that UVC can cause severe skin burns and eye injuries and says never to look directly into a UVC source, even briefly (FDA guidance on UVC lights and lamps).
