To make a bakery website, choose a domain and website builder, design clear pages, add accurate bakery information, configure online ordering if it suits your operations, improve local discoverability, and keep the site up to date. The right setup depends on whether customers mainly need to find your hours and contact you or should also be able to browse a menu and place orders online.

1. Choose a domain and hosting

Choose a domain that customers can recognize and type, such as your bakery’s name or a distinctive specialty. Check availability and renewal costs before purchasing; prices vary and should be confirmed with the provider at the time you register.

Hosting is where the website’s files and services are made available online. Many website builders include hosting as part of their site setup, while other approaches require choosing hosting separately. Decide which route fits your comfort with managing a website and the features you need.

2. Choose a website builder and template

Start with the work the website must do. An informational site can focus on products, hours, location, and a way to get in touch. A bakery taking orders online also needs a manageable menu, checkout, payment handling, and fulfillment settings.

HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites
  • HTML CSS Design and Build Web Sites
  • Comes with secure packaging
  • It can be a gift option

Wix’s bakery website guide walks through choosing a builder and template. Square’s documentation explains that its online ordering profiles use menus and menu items to form a catalog for food and beverage sellers. Compare options based on daily needs rather than assuming one platform is best for every bakery.

  • How easily can staff change items, prices, and availability?
  • Can customers submit custom cake or catering requests?
  • Can you configure pickup and delivery to match your actual service?
  • How do payment and tax settings work?
  • Does the site and ordering flow work well on a phone?
  • Can you use your own domain and maintain your bakery’s branding?
  • What are the ongoing costs, including any required services? Check current terms directly; the available sources do not provide a like-for-like price comparison.

3. Design the site so customers can decide quickly

Make the information visitors are likely to need easy to find: what you sell, where or how you serve customers, when you are open, and how to order or contact you. Use straightforward navigation and give the menu, location or service area, hours, contact details, and ordering action clear places on the site.

Check the pages on a phone, especially the route from browsing the menu to placing an order. If the bakery takes custom requests, make that route distinct from standard ordering so customers know how to ask about a cake or other special item.

4. Add accurate bakery content

Give customers enough detail to understand what is available and what to do next. Useful content includes current product names and descriptions, prices where appropriate, custom-order instructions, the bakery’s story, location or service area, opening hours, and contact information.

Use photos to show the baked goods. Wix recommends showcasing products with photos and videos in its bakery guide. Keep imagery and descriptions representative of what customers can actually order; update them when products or availability change.

5. Set up online ordering only if it fits your operations

Online ordering is useful only when the website’s menu and checkout reflect how the bakery fulfills orders. Before publishing, check each part of the process:

  • Menu: Add the right items and descriptions, and make sure customers can see what is currently available.
  • Availability: Set ordering windows, cutoffs, and sold-out items to match how the bakery works.
  • Payment and taxes: Configure the available payment methods and applicable tax settings for the business.
  • Pickup and delivery: Set realistic instructions, times, and service areas.
  • Custom orders: Explain how customers should submit requests and what information the bakery needs.

Square documents menus and pickup and delivery settings for online ordering profiles for food and beverage sellers. Confirm the platform’s current features and settings before relying on them for your workflow.

6. Help nearby customers find accurate information

Keep the bakery’s name, location or service area, and hours consistent and correct across the website and the business’s other listings. Wix recommends local search optimization and an accurate Google Business Profile in its bakery guide. Clear, current information helps customers determine whether the bakery serves their area and when they can visit or order.

Some integrations have prerequisites. Square’s documentation for its Google ordering integration lists requirements that include a published site, website ordering, a Google Business Profile, and pickup or local delivery; some merchant categories may not be eligible. Check current account availability and eligibility before telling customers that the integration is available.

7. Maintain and promote the website

Treat the website as part of the bakery’s day-to-day operations. Update seasonal menus, sold-out items, holiday order deadlines, hours, pickup instructions, and product photos when they change. Periodically test the customer journey—from finding an item to reaching the right contact or checkout route—and fix outdated details.

Link to the site from the bakery’s existing channels, such as its social profiles or customer communications. Where customers place orders online, keep the live menu and fulfillment information aligned with what staff can actually provide.

Bakery website examples: features worth borrowing

Wix’s Yori’s Bakery example illustrates several possible design choices: product photography, simple navigation, online ordering, custom cake inquiries, and background about the business. These are useful elements to consider, not proof that a particular layout increases sales. The right choices depend on the bakery’s products and the way it serves customers.

For a small bakery that takes orders by phone, a clear menu, hours, location, and contact route may be the priority. A bakery accepting online orders may also need a menu catalog, checkout, pickup or delivery instructions, and a separate path for custom requests. Keep the site focused on the tasks customers can complete with your actual setup.
