You can make a 3D fossil model with close-range photogrammetry: take a set of sharp, overlapping photographs from different angles, reconstruct them in photogrammetry software, then add and validate a known scale if you need real-world measurements. The result represents only the surfaces the photographs capture; a single view cannot reveal depth, hidden faces, or internal anatomy.
What you need before you start
Photogrammetry estimates three-dimensional geometry by matching surface details visible in photographs taken from different camera positions. The U.S. National Park Service describes its use to document details on body fossils such as bones and teeth, as well as trace fossils such as tracks, burrows, and impressions. See the NPS guide to fossil photogrammetry.
- A camera or phone that can take sharp, detailed close-up photographs.
- Consistent, diffuse lighting that lets surface texture show without strong shadows.
- A stable support or, for a safe-to-move specimen, an optional rotating platform.
- Photogrammetry software, such as Meshroom or Agisoft Metashape.
- A known distance, such as a metric scale bar, if the model needs real-world dimensions.
No particular camera model or turntable is universally required. Choose the setup around the specimen and what the model needs to do.

Protect the fossil and choose a capture setup
Before moving or rotating a fossil, get permission from its owner or collection manager. The NPS warns that some specimens are fragile enough for minor handling to cause irreparable damage, and explains how digital models can help share valuable objects while avoiding risk to originals in “Bringing Fossils into the Digital Age” (2018).

- Small, stable specimen: If authorized and safe, place it on a clean support or turntable and move the camera and lights around it.
- Fragile specimen: Keep it in place and move the camera around it. If necessary, ask the collection manager about using an authorized replica.
- Track, slab, or in-place fossil: Photograph it where it lies when safe and permitted. Do not disturb a site or attach markers to the specimen.
A turntable can make it easier to capture successive views of a movable object, but it cannot show the base hidden against its support. Photograph an occluded surface only through a separate, safe and authorized setup.
Photograph overlapping views
- Set the scene. Fill enough of the frame with the fossil to show its texture, keep it in focus, and use even illumination. Move lamps to soften strong shadows and dark crevices. The Digital Atlas of Ancient Life’s fossil photogrammetry guide demonstrates a black background, desk lamps, a marked turntable, and additional camera angles; these are examples, not required equipment.
- Capture a complete circuit. Photograph the fossil from a ring of positions, ensuring neighboring images share visible surface features. If using a turntable, turn the specimen between shots; if it must remain still, move the camera instead.
- Repeat at different heights. Take another circuit from a higher or lower camera angle, and continue until each accessible surface appears from more than one view. A photo approximately every 10 degrees of turntable rotation is a starting recommendation in the Atlas guide, not a universal threshold; its guide suggests repeating from several angle sets.
- Keep the series consistent. Avoid changing focus, zoom, or exposure mid-series when that would make images inconsistent. Check that frames are sharp and that important surfaces are not hidden by shadows or other objects.
For more on why common visible details matter, Agisoft’s PhotoScan tutorial explains photogrammetric reconstruction and reference distances. If an area lacks coverage, take more photographs: the software cannot reliably reconstruct a surface that the images never show.

Reconstruct the photographs into a model
Import the image set into photogrammetry software, align the photos so the program estimates camera positions, and run its reconstruction steps to create a 3D representation. Exact controls vary by application and release, so follow the current instructions for the software you choose.
- Meshroom: AliceVision describes Meshroom as a free, open-source 3D reconstruction application. Its official page lists release 2025.1.0 and says a CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPU is recommended for full use of the current binary; systems without a supported GPU are limited to Draft Meshing. Check the Meshroom page for current compatibility and release details.
- Agisoft Metashape: Agisoft describes Metashape as software that processes digital images into spatial data, including for cultural heritage documentation and indirect measurement. See the Metashape product page for product information.
When the reconstruction finishes, inspect the geometry and texture rather than relying on a realistic-looking surface. Check for missing faces, holes, distorted edges, floating background geometry, and poor texture. A clean texture does not prove geometric accuracy; if a region is incomplete, capture it again from additional angles.

Set scale if you need dimensions
A photogrammetric model may have arbitrary size. For measurements or life-size output, include a known reference distance in enough photographs and enter that distance using the software’s scale or reference tools. Agisoft’s PhotoScan-era tutorial describes using a reference distance when ground control points are unavailable, while noting that marker-based georeferencing is usually more precise. Its interface instructions are for older software, so do not assume its menu paths match current versions.
A ruler that merely appears in a photograph helps viewers judge approximate size, but does not by itself establish that the reconstructed model has been calibrated. If you report dimensions, state how scale was set and checked. Preserve the original photographs if the model may support research or later reprocessing.

Know what the model can and cannot establish
- It documents photographed surfaces. A model cannot recover an underside that stayed hidden or internal anatomy that was never visible in the images.
- It is not automatically measurement-grade. Coverage, scale calibration, and the quality of the reconstruction all matter; do not call a model scientifically accurate solely because it looks convincing.
- Some surfaces may be harder to reconstruct. Glossy, uniform, transparent, very dark, or shadowed areas can make image matching difficult. The available fossil-specific guidance does not quantify failure rates for these materials.
- It does not replace collection records or permission. Photogrammetry can support documentation and sharing, but it cannot establish a fossil’s provenance or authorize handling.
