In OBS Studio, enable Settings > Advanced > Automatic Reconnect, then confirm the YouTube stream URL and stream key are correct. This makes OBS retry its connection to YouTube after a disruption—but it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open, or that a camera or other source will recover. Test both OBS and the YouTube Live Control Room before relying on an unattended stream.

What automatic reconnect does—and what it cannot do

A 24/7 YouTube stream depends on three separate parts: the local encoder and its sources, the network path from the encoder to YouTube, and the live event in YouTube Studio. OBS automatic reconnect addresses the encoder’s output connection. It cannot repair a failed camera, restore an internet connection that remains down, or guarantee that YouTube has kept the event live.

YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal outage duration after which an event will end, or promise that an event will resume after any particular interruption. Treat reconnect as a recovery attempt, not a guarantee of uninterrupted continuity. YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived; that is an archiving statement, not a reconnection promise (YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance).

Set up OBS to retry the connection

  1. Open OBS Studio settings. Select Settings > Advanced and locate Automatic Reconnect. OBS’s overview documents the control; its location or wording can vary by release and platform (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
  2. Enable automatic reconnect. Check that the option is on before starting the stream.
  3. Set a retry budget. OBS output settings provide a maximum retry count and a starting retry delay. The delay increases on successive attempts, doubling each time, so the total retry period depends on both settings. Choose a budget suited to the interruptions you expect; there is no universally correct retry count. The behavior is described in the OBS Output API Reference.
  4. Apply the change and test it. Do not infer that reconnect works just because the checkbox is enabled. Observe an intentional brief network interruption, then verify what both OBS and YouTube report.

Verify YouTube’s event and encoder settings

In YouTube Studio > Go live, open the relevant stream in the Live Control Room. Confirm that the encoder is configured with the stream URL and stream key for that event. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed; keep it private like a password. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube’s live settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. These affect how an encoder can start or stop a stream, but the cited guidance does not say they guarantee that a previously ended event will recover after an outage. Check the event’s status in the Live Control Room rather than assuming OBS has restored it (Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Run a controlled outage test before leaving it unattended

  1. Test the actual stream setup. Start the intended event with representative video motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while it is running.
  2. Check bitrate against upload capacity. Make sure the encoder’s upload bitrate is sustainable on the connection in use; a connection that cannot maintain it can produce dropped frames or disconnects. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains bitrate and recommends checking stream health (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
  3. Simulate a short network loss. Briefly interrupt the connection in a controlled way. Watch OBS’s output status and YouTube’s Live Control Room to see whether the encoder reconnects and whether the event remains active.
  4. Check the source separately. Confirm that video and audio resume after the connection returns. A successful encoder reconnection does not establish that a webcam, capture device, or other source has recovered.
  5. Repeat with realistic conditions. A short test cannot establish how a longer outage will behave. If the stream must run unattended, test the failure modes that matter to your setup and arrange a way to check event status.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and failed reconnects

What you see Likely area to check What to do
OBS reports dropped frames or unstable output Network instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Check upload capacity and stream health; use wired networking where possible. OBS also recommends checking the router, modem, and other network hardware (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
OBS retries but cannot reach YouTube Local connection, modem/router, wider ISP path, or encoder destination configuration Check the internet connection and network hardware; verify the event’s stream URL and key in the encoder. If local checks do not resolve continuing instability, contact your ISP.
OBS reconnects but the YouTube event is no longer live YouTube event state, not just the encoder connection Check the Live Control Room and follow the intended event workflow to start a stream again if needed. Do not assume OBS retries will revive an event that has ended.
Video or audio does not return even though OBS is connected Camera, capture device, or other source process Inspect the source in OBS independently of the output connection and restore or restart that source as needed.
The stream works on a wired connection but fails on Wi-Fi Wireless link or local network conditions Prefer a wired connection for the encoder where practical, and investigate the router and network path if instability persists.

Choose protection for the failure you actually have

Automatic reconnect is useful when OBS is running and the encoder-to-YouTube connection briefly drops. It does not provide a second internet path or backup power. If the primary internet connection is the weak point, a cellular failover router may help only when the hardware and carrier support it and usable coverage is available; verify its failover behavior before depending on it. If the local computer or connection should not be responsible for continuous prerecorded playback, YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists cloud-based tools for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That is a different setup from reconnecting a live camera feed, and the listing itself is not an outage guarantee.
