You can run a continuous gentle-rain study stream on YouTube by preparing audio and visuals you have the right to use, sending them through a live-stream encoder, and keeping that encoder, computer, power, and internet connection running. YouTube supports ongoing 24/7 broadcasts, but neither an uninterrupted stream nor a complete all-day replay is guaranteed. This guide covers setup, settings, rights, monitoring, and a cloud alternative.

Before you start: check channel eligibility and prepare your rain content

Confirm that your channel can stream

YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. YouTube’s current Help guidance also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. These are operational caps, not guarantees about stream performance. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for current eligibility and limits.

Use audio and visuals you are allowed to broadcast

Use rain recordings, music, artwork, and video that you created or have permission to use for a YouTube live broadcast and any resulting archive. Keep the original files, license terms, and permission records together. The phrase “royalty-free” alone does not establish that a particular asset is cleared for this use.

YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for the rights needed to exploit live content, including music rights where relevant. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content; a match can lead to a warning, temporary interruption, or termination. A licensed rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent interruptions. An archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright.

Choose how to keep the stream running

Run an encoder on your own computer

YouTube supports computer-based encoders for live broadcasts. This is the direct do-it-yourself route if you can leave a suitable computer, encoder, and dependable internet connection running. Prepare a program containing your rain visuals and audio, then configure the encoder to send it to the YouTube broadcast. The exact looping controls vary by encoder; verify that your selected software can repeat the prepared material before you schedule a long stream.

YouTube’s API documentation uses an ongoing 24/7 feed as an example of a live broadcast. That describes a supported broadcast pattern, not protection from interruptions caused by a computer, network, account, encoder, or platform issue. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.

Set up a YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder

  1. Verify eligibility. Make sure channel verification and live-stream access are active before planning the launch. If you have just enabled streaming, allow for YouTube’s activation process rather than assuming you can start instantly.
  2. Create or select a live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and choose the encoder route. You can prepare a scheduled broadcast or an ongoing feed. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.
  3. Get the stream details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a password: do not share it, publish it, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Build the program. Set the encoder’s video source to your rain scene or looping visual and its audio source to the intended rain recording or mix. Configure the repeat behavior in the encoder or media source; test that the visual and audio continue cleanly at the end of a loop.
  5. Start with a short private or unlisted test. Check that the picture, rain sound, and levels are correct on YouTube before making the broadcast public. Confirm that the correct stream key and broadcast are paired, and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal.
  6. Go live and monitor. Keep the encoder connected and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators, especially after launch and after any change to bitrate, resolution, or network conditions.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a starting point

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary low-latency streaming. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current recommendations.

There is no single bitrate suitable for every resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for your chosen output, then make sure your available upload connection can sustain it. Test the intended configuration rather than relying on a setting copied from a different stream.

  • Protocol: RTMPS.
  • Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, as supported by your encoder and chosen YouTube settings.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second frequency recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; use YouTube’s stated sample rate and bitrate guidance for stereo or 5.1.
  • Bitrate and resolution: select values from YouTube’s current table for the actual codec and frame rate, and validate them with a test.

Plan for continuity and replays

Keep the local streaming setup available

For the computer-encoder method, the machine must remain powered on and connected, the encoder must stay active, and the internet connection must sustain the upload. This is a practical requirement, not an uptime guarantee. If the stream disconnects, check the encoder and YouTube stream health, restore the connection, and confirm the intended broadcast is receiving a signal again.

Do not rely on one complete 24/7 replay

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours, and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For replay, record a local archive as a backup and consider ending and restarting the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours. YouTube’s own advice is: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

  • You cannot start the broadcast: confirm channel verification, live access, age eligibility, and that no live-stream restriction applies. Recheck the current channel limits if other broadcasts are already active.
  • YouTube receives no signal: verify the selected broadcast, stream URL, and stream key in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed or changed, generate or select the current key in Studio and update the encoder.
  • Stream health is poor or dropped frames rise: investigate an unstable upload connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution in line with YouTube’s current settings table, then test again. OBS specifically identifies unstable connections or an excessive bitrate as likely causes of dropped frames; see OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
  • Rain audio or visuals stop at the end of a clip: check the repeat or loop behavior in the media source or encoder, then run another test long enough to observe the transition.
  • The live broadcast is interrupted after a rights warning: identify the matched material and remove it or resolve the rights issue. If using licensed third-party material, check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
  • No full replay appears: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording and shorter sessions when a complete replay matters.

Understand monetization before building the channel around watch time

Running a stream continuously does not guarantee monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and expects original, authentic content rather than mass-produced, generic, or highly repetitive material. Repeating nearly identical rain footage may raise concerns during a channel-level review, even if you own the recording. Original field recordings, distinctive mixes, and meaningfully varied scenes can make the work more individual, but they do not guarantee approval. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
