You can make a 24/7 YouTube stream of gentle lake and loon sounds by preparing video and audio you have the rights to use, sending them through an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live, and arranging for the program to repeat. For a genuine around-the-clock broadcast, plan how you will keep the encoder running and restart the stream when needed. YouTube may not save a stream longer than 12 hours, so keep a local recording if an archive matters.

What you need before you start

  • A verified YouTube channel: YouTube requires channel verification and says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A program to broadcast: Prepare lake visuals and ambient audio as a video program, or use an encoder setup with separate video and audio sources. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, including setups with external equipment such as microphones and preamps.
  • Permission for every element: Use your own recordings or obtain rights that cover live streaming on YouTube. Keep copies of licenses and permission records.
  • A computer and reliable connection for a DIY encoder: They must remain available while the encoder is sending the stream. If the computer or connection stops, the stream can stop too.

OBS is a free software option; its help portal provides setup guidance and points users to an Auto-Configuration Wizard for basic settings. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. See the OBS Help Portal and YouTube encoder settings guidance.

Prepare the lake-and-loon program

Capture or source material you can use

Record your own lake footage and ambient sound, or license footage and audio with terms that explicitly permit the intended YouTube live use. A recording being available online is not permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to represent that they have the necessary rights and to comply with applicable laws and regulations: Livestream terms and conditions.

If you record at a location with access rules or other restrictions, check those requirements before recording. Keep the source, permission, license terms, and any correspondence together so you can respond if a rights issue arises. No particular sound library or recording in this guide has been verified as cleared for use.

Make a program that works when repeated

Choose a section whose sound and movement remain comfortable over time. Avoid abrupt audio cuts, sudden changes in loudness, or a visual transition that looks jarring when the video repeats. If you combine sources, check that the music or nature sounds are covered by the same rights you need for the broadcast.

For a simple setup, assemble the footage and audio into a video file. Alternatively, add them as separate sources in an encoder and arrange for the media to repeat there. Exact looping controls depend on the encoder and source type; the workflow below describes the general pattern, not a tested OBS-specific looping procedure.

Set up a YouTube Live encoder stream in OBS

  1. Open OBS and run its basic setup wizard. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard from OBS’s Tools menu if available in your installed version. Review its suggested settings rather than assuming they are right for your particular footage, audio, and connection. OBS setup help is available at obsproject.com/help.
  2. Add your program sources. In the OBS Sources panel, add the prepared video file or your video and audio sources. Confirm the lake image is visible and the audio meter responds when the program plays. Set the media source to repeat using the repeat or loop option available for that source.
  3. Set the YouTube stream destination. In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and retrieve its stream settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then connect the account or enter the stream key as prompted. The exact connection choices can vary by OBS version and account setup.
  4. Protect the stream key. A stream key is a credential used by the encoder to send a feed YouTube can accept. Treat it like a password: do not post it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in publicly accessible notes. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
  5. Choose output settings suited to your source and connection. Use the resolution and frame rate your footage can support, and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the corresponding bitrate and keyframe recommendations. Do not raise quality settings beyond what your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends a test with representative sound and motion and checking stream health before the event: encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
  6. Test privately or before the scheduled broadcast. Start the encoder and verify the image, transitions, audio presence, and comfortable listening level. Check YouTube’s stream health indicators, then correct problems before making the event public.
  7. Start the live stream. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the incoming feed in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube Studio to start the event if its setup requires a separate start action.
  8. Keep the encoder operating and monitored. For a local setup, the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection need to stay available. Have a plan to notice a dropped feed and restart the encoder and event as appropriate; do not assume a local setup will recover unattended.

Plan continuity and saved archives

A single continuous stream is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

If you want an archive, record locally and plan periodic stream segments or restarts that keep each YouTube stream under the 12-hour threshold. Check that local storage is sufficient and verify the recording after a test. Neither a complete YouTube archive nor uninterrupted broadcasting is guaranteed by running a stream continuously.

Copyright checks for loon calls and ambient audio

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. If you licensed material, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. Read Copyright issues with live streams.

  • Use your own loon recordings where possible, or get written permission that covers the live broadcast and any archive or replay you intend to offer.
  • Ask the rights holder whether the channel should be allowlisted in Content ID before going live.
  • Keep licenses and permissions accessible, but do not treat documentation as a substitute for the owner’s Content ID allowlisting when it is needed.
  • Do not assume a short clip, nature sound, or recording posted elsewhere is automatically free to rebroadcast.

Monetization is separate from keeping the stream live

YouTube applies its channel monetization policies to live streams. Its policy says monetized content should be original and authentic, rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified the policy by renaming “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content”; it said repetitive or mass-produced material was already ineligible. A continuous loop does not by itself establish eligibility, approval, or advertising revenue. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

YPP acceptance and the applicable monetization module are separate requirements for relevant revenue features. Review How to earn money on YouTube and Choose how you want to monetize. Build a distinctive program with original material and meaningful variation, but do not treat those choices as a guarantee of acceptance or earnings.

Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

  • Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube service and the current stream key.
  • Confirm the event is configured in YouTube Studio and that the encoder is actually streaming.
  • If the key may have been exposed or changed, create or retrieve the current key and update OBS.

The video or audio is missing

  • Check that the correct source is enabled and visible in OBS.
  • Play the program locally and confirm the audio meter moves; check that the intended audio source is routed to the stream.
  • Run another test and review YouTube’s stream health before going live.

The stream buffers or loses health

  • Lower the output settings if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again using the actual program.
  • Check the connection and computer load while OBS is streaming. A local broadcast depends on both remaining available.
  • Monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a successful start means the feed will remain stable.

The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match

Review YouTube’s notice and identify the matched material. Remove or replace it where appropriate; if you have a valid license, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption when allowlisting is needed.

The stream has no complete archive

Check its duration. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording and planned segments or restarts for future broadcasts if preserving the program matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I loop a video on YouTube Live?

Yes. Send a repeating video program through a live encoder; YouTube receives it as an encoder-based live stream.

Can I use recorded loon calls in my stream?

Yes, if you own the recording or have rights that cover the live use. Third-party audio can still trigger Content ID matching, so check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel.

Does a 24/7 stream guarantee YouTube monetization?

No. YPP approval, policy compliance, and the relevant monetization module are separate requirements, and runtime alone does not ensure eligibility or revenue.
