Design for the phone-sized screen, then verify the actual live output on phones and tablets. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and confirming mobile access; it does not specify a minimum text size, contrast ratio, or story-card layout. Add captions, check that they do not cover essential information, and choose latency and DVR settings around how viewers use the stream.
Design story visuals for small screens
Make each visual moment communicate one essential piece of information. Avoid dense paragraphs over moving imagery or a small ticker that viewers must read to understand the story. Where useful, provide supporting context in speech and captions.
These are practical design choices, not YouTube requirements: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not prescribe overlay dimensions, contrast ratios, or a story-card template. Judge readability from the stream itself, not from an editing monitor alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the actual playback size
- Watch the output on a phone and a tablet, at the size viewers are likely to use.
- Check portrait and landscape orientation if both are relevant to your channel’s presentation.
- Look for text that becomes difficult to read, is obscured by player controls, or competes with captions.
- If something is hard to follow, simplify or reposition it and test again. A desktop preview alone cannot establish that the mobile version is readable.
YouTube’s creator tips recommend checking that a live event is accessible on mobile devices and reviewing the Live Control Room preview before starting. YouTube’s live-streaming tips are a useful preflight reference.

Plan how captions will reach YouTube
Captions are supplied by the creator; viewers’ caption controls do not generate them for your stream. YouTube describes embedded 608/708 captions and delivery through supported software. Its documentation says the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, while YouTube currently supports one track in the documented embedded workflow. Do not assume that workflow provides multiple simultaneous tracks.
YouTube defines closed captions as “the visual display of the audio in a program.” See YouTube’s live caption requirements to choose a delivery method your production setup can reliably send.

Test captions in the live player
- Check captions on a phone and tablet, not just in the encoder or desktop preview.
- Confirm that captions arrive in time to follow the narration.
- Check whether captions cover story text or another essential part of the picture.
- Viewers can turn captions on and customize their size and style, but those controls do not replace the need to send captions.
YouTube documents caption controls for Android and iPhone/iPad, including size and style adjustments. On iPhone and iPad, viewers can also create a style through device accessibility settings. The “Show when muted” option is documented as available on mobile and tablet. See YouTube’s caption settings guidance and check the relevant device controls yourself, since the menus may vary by device or software version.
Choose latency and DVR for the viewing experience
Balance latency against buffering
Lower latency can increase playback buffering. YouTube says low latency is less important when the creator is not interacting with the audience. For an unattended or mostly prerecorded story loop, consider whether reduced delay benefits viewers; for chat-led segments, interaction may make low latency more useful. There is no single setting that suits every stream. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Decide whether viewers should be able to catch up
When DVR is enabled, viewers can pause and rewind during a live stream. That can help someone who joins late catch an earlier story beat. Consider whether that flexibility suits the way your continuous story is meant to be watched; check the DVR option in your stream settings. YouTube explains the feature in its live-streaming tips.
Preflight and monitor the 24/7 stream
- Review the Live Control Room preview. Check the composition and confirm that the event is accessible on mobile before starting.
- Watch on real devices. Test a phone and tablet, including the orientations your audience may use, and inspect both story text and captions.
- Monitor audio and video. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring stream quality. For a continuous stream, repeat the readability check after changing overlays, aspect ratio, caption setup, or stream configuration.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder. This is network guidance, not a guarantee of readable text or a particular video quality.
See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for preview and monitoring guidance, and YouTube’s streaming tips for network preparation.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the story loop to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist from the cloud to YouTube. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. You still need to check the story layout and captions in the YouTube player on real phones and tablets; cloud playback does not make text readable by itself.
