To make an OBS-run YouTube music stream reconnect after an internet outage, open Settings > Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set a retry interval and enough retry attempts to cover the outages you expect. OBS can reconnect its encoder, but that does not guarantee the same YouTube live event will continue or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback. Test the complete setup before relying on it.
Set OBS to reconnect automatically
- In OBS Studio, open Settings > Advanced.
- Find the automatic reconnect controls and enable Automatically Reconnect. Exact labels and behavior can vary by OBS release, so check the controls in the version installed on your computer.
- Set a retry delay and maximum number of retries that give OBS enough time to recover from the interruptions your connection may experience. Do not assume a particular default; verify the values in your version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Automatic reconnect is an encoder recovery setting, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve every live event. OBS notes that intermittent disconnections and dropped frames can result from an unstable connection between the computer and the remote ingest server, or from a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Make the connection more resilient
Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Treat that as capacity for other network use as well as the stream: other people and devices sharing your connection can reduce the upload capacity available to OBS. YouTube also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Check encoder settings against YouTube guidance
Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for the resolution and frame rate you use; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS where supported. Check the current recommendations in YouTube’s streaming settings guidance.

Test recovery before leaving the channel unattended
- Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test stream and preview it in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Briefly interrupt the internet connection, for example by disconnecting the computer’s network connection, then restore it.
- Watch OBS to see whether it reconnects. In Live Control Room, check stream health messages; then confirm what viewers see on the public watch page after recovery.
- Repeat under conditions that resemble the interruptions you want to handle. A short test does not prove recovery from a longer outage.
YouTube recommends testing the streaming setup, previewing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its guidance for a backup encoder also recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that playback rolls over to the backup. A backup encoder is an optional redundancy strategy, not a requirement for enabling OBS reconnect. Neither test establishes that every outage will preserve the same live event.
Diagnose a failed reconnect
OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects again
Check whether the upload connection is unstable or the configured bitrate exceeds what it can sustain. Account for other network users, then test outbound internet performance. If network issues continue, contact your ISP. OBS’s troubleshooting guide also advises working through its configuration, software, hardware, and ISP checks.

The encoder appears overloaded
Inspect OBS errors and CPU load, and update the encoder software. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and CPU load before treating the issue as a network problem. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting steps.

OBS cannot start the stream
Check that the stream URL and key are correct. For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube advises verifying the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the key in the encoder if needed. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

OBS reconnects, but viewers do not see the expected stream
Check the Live Control Room health messages and the watch page directly. A successful encoder reconnection alone does not establish whether YouTube continued the same live event or whether playback resumed for viewers. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that archive policy is not a promise that a stream will restart or recover after an outage.
When a second encoder is worth considering
A second encoder can provide another route to the stream if the primary encoder or its connection fails, but it adds setup and monitoring. You must test that the player rolls over as intended when the primary encoder stops; YouTube recommends testing this behavior rather than assuming failover will work. A second encoder does not fix an unstable shared internet connection by itself, and YouTube does not guarantee identical event behavior in every failure.
