To run a 24/7 lofi stream on YouTube, prepare a looping program, send it through a live encoder such as OBS, and keep the encoder running—or use a cloud service to play uploaded videos while your computer is off. For a day-and-night look, either render the lighting changes into one continuous video or build separate scenes and use a switching method you have tested. YouTube treats the result as a live broadcast even though its music and visuals were prepared in advance.
Choose how the day-to-night scene will work
Looping the program and changing the scene from day to night are separate decisions. OBS supports looping media and playlists, but its Media Sources guide does not document a built-in clock-based scene scheduler. Pick a visual workflow before configuring the stream.
Render the transition into one video
For the simplest dependable sequence, make a long video in which the room, window, sky and lighting change from day to night, then return to the starting look at the end. Add the audio in your editor or use a separate audio source in OBS. Design the end-to-start transition so it does not produce a conspicuous jump, silence or flash when the file loops.
Use separate scenes with a tested switching method
You can make distinct day and night scenes, but you will need a way to switch between them: OBS’s documented media-loop feature alone does not schedule scene changes by time of day. Verify your chosen switching workflow before launch, including what happens after an OBS restart or a media source reconnects. If you do not need an exact timed switch, a playlist of prepared clips may be enough, provided you test its order and loop behavior.

Prepare the lofi music and artwork
Use tracks and visuals you created, commissioned with the necessary rights, or licensed for the exact use you plan—including YouTube livestreaming and, if relevant, monetization. Keep original project files, written permissions and a rights ledger for every track, sample, illustration, font and animation. Record license versions, attribution rules, territories, and whether livestreaming and monetization are covered.
- Make the day-to-night progression intentional: decide when the sky, window light and room details change.
- Check that audio remains continuous across the loop and does not clip or fall silent at the join.
- Give the channel and each program meaningful original identity and variation. Repeating low-effort material across uploads can create monetization problems even if you have permission to use it.
- Keep a separate copy of the source media so a damaged project or local file does not prevent recovery.
“Royalty-free” by itself does not establish that a track is cleared for a 24/7 YouTube live stream. YouTube describes possible lawful-use routes such as permission, applicable copyright exceptions, Creative Commons terms, and Audio Library or Creator Music for music, but warns that none guarantees avoiding a Content ID claim or copyright strike. See YouTube’s copyright guidance. Rights questions can depend on the specific license, material and jurisdiction.
Choose local OBS or cloud playout
OBS is among the encoder options listed by YouTube. A local setup gives you direct production control, but your computer, media storage, power and upload connection must remain available. Cloud playout can keep prepared media running without your personal computer online, but depends on a service provider and its supported storage, destinations and recovery behavior.

| Consideration | Local OBS | Cloud-hosted prepared media |
|---|---|---|
| What must stay available | Your encoder computer, media, power and upload connection | The provider’s cloud playout; you manage the service through its dashboard or browser |
| Best fit | Custom scene control, interactive production and direct control | Prepared programs when you do not want your personal computer to stay on |
| Main trade-off | Local maintenance and continuity of your computer and connection | Service cost, provider dependency, storage or destination limits, and recovery behavior |
| Day/night handling | Render one video, or use scenes with a separately tested switching method | Confirm that the service can play or switch the sequence you intend before relying on it |
Configure a looping source in OBS
For a single rendered video, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist, OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes using a VLC Video source with playlist looping. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for the current controls. A playlist does not by itself guarantee day/night timing; test how the selected source advances and loops.

- Check eligibility and enable live streaming early. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16 and the channel must meet its live-streaming requirements. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See Get started with live streaming and YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and create or schedule a stream. Review its title, description, visibility and other watch-page settings before connecting.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter these in the streaming settings of your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to connect to your broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start sending the program. Start the OBS stream after your media sources are ready. Check the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then complete the live-start step there if prompted.
- Confirm the public watch page. Check the stream from a separate browser or device and verify the expected title, visibility, picture and sound before announcing it.
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; a continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that limit, so do not assume YouTube will preserve a complete multi-day replay. If a replay matters, decide whether to end and restart broadcasts periodically, how to label successive watch pages, and how to keep your own recordings.
Test the whole setup before going public
Run a private or unlisted rehearsal long enough to exercise the media loop and every day/night transition. Check the incoming preview and the viewer experience, not just OBS’s program window.

- Picture and sound stay synchronized, with no blank, frozen or unintended black frames.
- The day-to-night change happens at the right point, and the loop returns cleanly to its start.
- Playlist order and repeat behavior match your plan.
- The selected YouTube stream key, visibility and watch-page details are correct.
- You know who will monitor the stream and how to respond to a disconnect, a copyright notice or a source that stops playing.
- You have a fallback copy of the media and a short restart procedure.
For local OBS, include the host computer in your continuity plan: it needs power, the media files and a stable upload connection for the stream to continue. Test what happens when a source restarts and when the encoder reconnects; a rehearsal is safer than assuming recovery will work as intended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand copyright and monetization limits
A live status does not guarantee eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and expects original, authentic content. The policy page records a July 15, 2025 update renaming “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarifying that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing rules. YouTube also reviews reused content separately from copyright permission: having permission does not necessarily demonstrate meaningful original value. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies; do not assume a lofi stream will be accepted into or remain in the YouTube Partner Program.
