You can use an M3U media playlist as the source for a continuous Punjabi Bhangra broadcast by playing its tracks through OBS Studio’s VLC Video source and sending the OBS output to YouTube Live. First confirm that every playlist entry plays, and secure live-stream rights for every recording. An M3U playlist is not, by itself, permission to rebroadcast music or YouTube’s HLS ingest playlist.

Before you set up the stream

Get permission for the music

Make sure your rights cover broadcasting each recording live on YouTube in the territories where the stream will be available. If you plan to leave the live archive available afterward, confirm that the agreement also covers that archive. A consumer music subscription, public playlist, or accessible M3U link does not establish rebroadcast rights.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. If you have a licence for third-party content, ask the rightsholder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Keep your licence and any allowlisting confirmation. YouTube may make Content ID claims on an archived live stream after it finishes.

Check what the M3U points to

An ordinary M3U file is a playlist for a media player. Its entries need to resolve to files or authorized media URLs that the computer running OBS can access. A list of relative paths, authenticated links, or provider-generated URLs may not work in your setup. Test the actual list in VLC and then in OBS; do not assume every M3U variant imports or plays correctly.

Prepare the computer and connection

Install OBS Studio and a VLC build compatible with it. OBS documents that its VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for that source. Keep the computer powered, prevent it from sleeping, and use a reliable wired network connection if available. A local-machine stream depends on the computer, power, network, and encoder continuing to work; this setup does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Build and test the playlist in OBS

  1. Test the playlist in VLC. Open the M3U in VLC and check that each intended recording starts and plays through. Resolve missing files, expired or unauthorized URLs, and entries that require credentials before configuring OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast, then use Sources > + > VLC Video Source. If the source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Add the media items. In the VLC Video Source properties, use the playlist controls to add the local media files or authorized media URLs, then arrange them in the desired order. OBS documents playlist playback, but does not promise compatibility with every external M3U format. If your particular M3U does not load or resolve properly, add the media items directly and verify each path.
  4. Set the playback order. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want randomized playback. Enable Loop Playlist so OBS returns to the beginning after the final item. Loop Playlist is on by default in OBS’s documented VLC source settings, but check the setting in your installed version.
  5. Choose how the source behaves when hidden. A source can stop, pause, resume, or continue playback when it is hidden, depending on its settings. For a continuous single-scene program, avoid hiding the VLC source during the broadcast and test the chosen visibility behavior before going live.
  6. Preview a full cycle. Listen for silence, abrupt volume changes, broken video, and unexpected gaps between items. Let the playlist reach its end and confirm that it loops back as intended. Test representative material rather than assuming every entry behaves like the first.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast, then open the stream settings and choose the stream key YouTube provides. Availability of live streaming may depend on the channel’s current eligibility and YouTube settings.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Enter the key only in OBS under Settings > Stream, using the service and server details shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Do not publish or share the key; anyone with access to it could send a stream to your channel.
  3. Use RTMPS for the normal OBS workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the server and connection details YouTube displays rather than guessing an ingest address.
  4. Start with the stream unlisted or private if you need a final check. Confirm the preview, audio, title, visibility, and broadcast settings in YouTube before making the stream public. Run a test long enough to check transitions and playlist looping.

Set OBS encoder settings for YouTube

YouTube’s recommended values vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection will remain stable.

Setting Practical configuration
Ingest protocol RTMPS, recommended by YouTube for the standard encoder workflow.
Video codec YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Use a codec supported by your OBS encoder and hardware; H.264 is a straightforward starting point.
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended by YouTube; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps. Choose a rate your source, encoder, and connection can sustain.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Check the selected OBS output and audio settings.
H.264 1080p at 30 fps YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended.
H.264 720p at 30 fps YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended.

In OBS, check Settings > Video for the base and output resolution and frame rate, and Settings > Output for the streaming encoder and bitrate controls. Match the bitrate recommendation to the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually select; do not apply the 1080p30 figure to every format. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain with headroom, then test with representative audio and motion. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings during the test and broadcast.

Do not confuse an M3U media list with HLS ingest

Both ordinary media playlists and HLS use M3U-derived formats, but they serve different purposes. In this workflow, the M3U is an input playlist for media playback; OBS encodes that playback and sends it to YouTube, normally over RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS ingest is a separate encoder protocol for uploading segmented media. A generic M3U file is not automatically a valid HLS ingest playlist.

Only choose HLS if your encoder is deliberately configured for YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements. YouTube’s guidance specifies TS segments sent with HTTPS POST/PUT, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These settings are not needed to play an ordinary M3U playlist through OBS.

Check the stream and plan for interruptions

Run a meaningful test

  • Confirm that audio and video play together and that all playlist entries resolve.
  • Observe several transitions, including the final item looping back to the start.
  • Watch YouTube stream health and address warnings before relying on the broadcast.
  • Check that the computer will not sleep, restart, or lose its network connection during the intended run.
  • Decide separately whether YouTube should archive the broadcast, and verify that your music rights cover the archive.

Plan for recovery

The sources do not establish a maximum continuous-session duration for this setup or guarantee that an encoder session will run indefinitely. Keep a way to check the broadcast and restart OBS or reconnect the stream if the computer, network, encoder, or YouTube connection fails. If unattended operation is essential, account for those dependencies rather than treating a successful test as proof of uninterrupted uptime.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is missing in OBS VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install a compatible VLC build; OBS documents matching 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
Some playlist items fail to play A path is invalid, a file is unavailable, a URL has expired, or the playlist format is not handled as expected. Open the M3U in VLC, check each entry, and add working files directly to the OBS source if needed.
The playlist stops at the last item Playlist looping is off or the source is not configured as expected. Check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video Source properties and test the end-of-list transition.
Playback changes or stops when changing scenes The source’s visibility behavior is pausing or stopping playback. Keep the source visible in the live scene and inspect its playback behavior settings.
YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the network/computer may be struggling. Use a lower supported output format or bitrate, test the connection with representative content, and monitor YouTube’s warnings.
The live stream is replaced, interrupted, or terminated A third-party content match, rights issue, or policy strike may be involved. Review YouTube’s notice, secure rights for live use and the relevant territories, and ask the rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting.
