You can use encoder software on a computer or a compatible standalone hardware encoder. YouTube does not prescribe a special black-screen audio preset, so you’ll need to configure and test the audio and video sources in your chosen encoder.
Before you start: check access and prepare your content
Confirm your channel can livestream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. If livestreaming has never been enabled, activation can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on well before the planned broadcast. Use YouTube Studio to check access and enable livestreaming.
Prepare a black image and audio you can use
Use a static black image or frame as the encoder’s video source, and an ocean recording as its audio source. The recording must be yours or licensed for your intended use. Keep evidence of your rights, and check whether the permission covers livestreaming and any replay or separate recording you plan to publish.
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party material. A match can trigger a warning, replace the stream with a static placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the live broadcast to avoid an interruption. YouTube’s livestream terms say you must hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation on Google services.

Set up the stream in YouTube and your encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream. Choose the encoder option rather than a webcam or mobile workflow.
- Copy the connection details: In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key identifies where the encoder sends the feed; treat it like a password and do not share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Set the sources: In the encoder, select the black image or frame as the video source and the ocean recording as the audio source. Set the audio to repeat if it is shorter than the intended broadcast. The exact controls depend on the encoder; YouTube does not provide a universal setting path for this particular combination.
- Choose a stream format your connection can sustain: Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder. YouTube’s recommendations vary with stream quality, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single required bitrate established for a black-screen ocean-audio stream. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can maintain reliably, then test it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different devices and network conditions.
- Start the encoder and preview: Start sending the feed, then check the preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Confirm that the image is black, the audio is clear and continuous, and the stream health is acceptable.
- Go live and keep watch: Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Monitor stream health and listen for dropouts or unexpected gaps. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the broadcast.
Test and monitor a long-running broadcast
Run an unlisted or private test first if you want to check the setup without making the stream public. Use the same encoder, audio source, and network connection you plan to use for the real broadcast. Check for clipped, distorted, silent, or intermittently missing audio; a still image does not reduce the need to test the sound.
A 24/7 target is also an operations problem: a local encoder depends on the computer or appliance staying on, power remaining available, and the internet connection holding. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality, but that does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Plan how you will notice an interruption and restart the encoder if needed.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 stream
YouTube says a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need a complete replay, keep a local recording or prepare a separate replay asset rather than assuming the live broadcast will become a full archive.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a livestream: Check that the channel is verified and has no livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream is live but the audio is silent or keeps stopping: Check that the encoder selected the intended audio input, that the recording plays through to the end, and that repeat or looping is enabled where needed. Re-test the full audio path before making the broadcast public.
- The audio is distorted or the stream health is poor: Test the encoder and connection at the selected settings. Choose a bitrate the upload connection can sustain; YouTube’s guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and quality rather than defining one setting for this format.
- The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match: Check the notice in Live Control Room. Confirm that the recording is cleared for livestream use and, if it is licensed third-party material, ask whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel.
- The stream stops while unattended: Check the computer or encoder, power, and internet connection, then restart the encoder and verify the preview before resuming. A local setup requires those components to keep working.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a separate recording or replay file if an archive matters.
