First decide what “resume at the right point” means. A viewer rewinding a live stream, a prerecorded nature video continuing from its file position after the broadcaster reconnects, and a live camera returning to its current view are different problems. YouTube’s DVR helps with the first; it does not, by itself, restore the broadcaster’s file position after an outage. For the second, check how your specific encoder handles both reconnection and its media source, then test it with the actual file, connection, and YouTube setup before relying on it.

Identify what needs to resume

Before changing settings, write down the source and the recovery goal. A “24/7 nature stream” might be a prerecorded forest loop, a live camera, or a hosted input. The right recovery behavior depends on which one you use.

Source and goal What needs to happen after an outage What to verify
Prerecorded file or playlist; continue the source The encoder reconnects to YouTube and continues playing from its current source position, if that position was retained. Whether the encoder keeps its source running while disconnected, pauses it, or restarts it. This behavior is encoder-specific.
Prerecorded file or playlist; replay missed footage The source returns to an earlier point so viewers see footage that was not delivered during the outage. Whether the workflow supports a buffer or a deliberate timeline-aware restart. Do not assume a normal reconnect replays lost content.
Live camera; continue the current view The camera feed and encoder reconnect, then resume sending the current live view. Whether the camera and encoder remain powered and whether the encoder reconnects automatically.
Live camera; replay what viewers missed Previously captured footage must be sent after the connection returns. Whether the workflow records or buffers the feed. A live camera alone has no earlier file position to restore.
Viewer paused or rewound during an active broadcast The viewer continues playback from the paused point rather than jumping to the live edge. Whether the platform and player provide DVR, and what duration or device limits apply.

What YouTube DVR does—and does not do

YouTube describes DVR as a viewer playback feature: viewers can pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. YouTube says, “Once a viewer resumes playing, the live stream will continue from where they hit pause.” That is the viewer’s playback position, not the broadcaster’s encoder or prerecorded file position after an internet outage. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

There are limits. YouTube says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and particular devices or apps may have lower limits. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream went live. These constraints concern viewer seeking; they do not prescribe how an encoder recovers its source after reconnecting.

Check your encoder’s recovery behavior

There is no universal encoder procedure established by YouTube for restoring a prerecorded source position after a broadcaster-side internet outage. The exact behavior depends on the encoder, source, and reconnect workflow. Consult the documentation for your encoder and answer these questions before treating a continuous stream as recovered:

  • Does it reconnect automatically? Find out whether the encoder retries after the network returns, how it handles a failed reconnect, and whether you must intervene.
  • What happens to the source while disconnected? Determine whether playback keeps advancing, pauses at the current position, or restarts. If it advances, a reconnect may send later footage rather than the missed section.
  • What should viewers see? Decide whether the desired outcome is to continue from the current source position, replay missed footage, or return to the current live edge. Those outcomes are not interchangeable.
  • Does YouTube treat the reconnect as the same broadcast? Confirm how your encoder’s reconnect method interacts with the existing YouTube broadcast. The available platform guidance does not establish one answer for every encoder and configuration.
  • What happens to recordings and archives? Check your platform and encoder’s handling of long-running sessions, interruptions, and archives. Do not assume that a stream that resumes correctly also produces an intact archive.

Run a controlled outage test before going 24/7

Test the exact source, encoder, stream key, destination, and reconnect settings you intend to use. Avoid testing on a broadcast where an interruption would be costly.

  1. Record the starting point. Start the stream and note the source timecode or a visible marker in the video. Confirm the live picture is reaching the intended YouTube broadcast.
  2. Interrupt the encoder’s internet connection briefly. Leave the source and encoder in the state you expect them to be in during a real outage. Note whether the source continues, pauses, or stops.
  3. Restore the connection and observe recovery. Check whether the encoder reconnects without intervention, whether YouTube receives video again, and whether the stream continues in the same broadcast or starts differently.
  4. Compare the resumed footage with your goal. Check the source marker. If the encoder has advanced, viewers may have missed content; if it restarted, it may repeat footage. Neither outcome is automatically “the right point”—it depends on your intended behavior.
  5. Check viewer playback and the archive separately. Test DVR from a viewer device while the broadcast is active, then verify the resulting recording or archive if one matters to you. Viewer rewind is not a substitute for checking broadcaster recovery.
  6. Repeat with the outage duration and source conditions that matter. A single successful reconnect does not establish behavior for every interruption or long-running session. Document the encoder version and settings that passed your test.

If you use YouTube HLS, follow its ingest requirements

The following details apply only if your encoder sends the stream to YouTube using HLS; they are not general source-recovery settings. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte-range support. Its HLS setup instructions also note that HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s HLS ingestion guide explains how media playlists describe segments that are assembled in stream order. That ingest structure does not tell a file-playing encoder where to restart its source after a network outage. Use your encoder’s documentation for its reconnect and source-position controls; do not change HLS segment settings expecting them to restore a file’s playback position.

Account for long-running stream and DVR limits

Continuous delivery is not the same as uninterrupted viewer rewind or a guaranteed intact archive. YouTube’s long-stream DVR qualification is relevant if viewers need to seek backward during a 24/7 broadcast. Separately, archive behavior can be vendor-specific: Livestream recommends regular restarts to reduce the risk of archive corruption and recommends a four-hour interval for its Producer workflow. Its Producer can restart a stream automatically. That is advice for that vendor’s workflow, not a universal YouTube rule or a setting to copy into a different encoder. See Livestream’s 24/7 stream guidance.

Cloudflare Stream DVR is a separate viewer-side option

If your delivery setup uses Cloudflare Stream, its DVR feature is opt-in with dvrEnabled=true. Cloudflare documents that a DVR-enabled player resumes from the viewer’s paused time rather than jumping to the live edge. Its guidance distinguishes playback URLs: it recommends a Video ID URL if the player should switch from the active broadcast to the recording after the broadcast ends; Live Input ID playback does not make past broadcasts available after a manifest reload. Cloudflare also documents a cap of up to 7,200 segments and a performance caveat for DVR-enabled broadcasts longer than three hours. These are Cloudflare-specific player and broadcast details, not a solution for restoring a broadcaster’s source-file position. See Cloudflare’s DVR for Live documentation.

Troubleshoot a failed or incorrect recovery

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
The encoder does not resume sending video Reconnect behavior, internet availability, encoder state, or destination configuration. Check the encoder’s reconnect logs and documentation, confirm the connection has returned, and repeat the controlled test. The correct recovery control depends on the encoder.
The stream returns, but the video is later in the file The source may have continued advancing while the outgoing connection was down. Check whether the encoder can pause or buffer the source during disconnection. If you need missed footage replayed, establish whether your workflow supports buffering or a timeline-aware restart.
The file starts over or repeats footage The encoder may restart the source when it reconnects. Check source restart and playlist behavior in the encoder documentation, then test again with a visible time marker.
Viewers cannot rewind as expected DVR may be unavailable, limited by stream duration, or constrained by the device or app. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance and test with the viewer’s actual device. Remember that DVR does not provide access to a point before the broadcast began.
The live picture returns but the archive is incomplete or problematic Archive handling may differ from live reconnection behavior, especially in long-running workflows. Check the destination and encoder’s archive guidance. Apply restart recommendations only if they are documented for your particular product.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded nature loop on YouTube, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos running from the cloud rather than relying on a home computer staying on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
