For reliable captions on a continuous YouTube kirtan stream, send captions through an encoder using EIA 608/CEA 708 or through YouTube’s caption-ingestion feed. YouTube’s automatic live captions are an English-only, eligibility-limited option for individual streams at normal latency—not a dependable way to caption sung lyrics in every language. Plan live captions and captions for the archived video separately.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents two ways to send captions with a live stream: embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the encoded video, or send a caption feed to the stream’s signed ingestion URL using supported caption software. YouTube currently supports one caption track, and each stream entry point can have one caption feed only. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Set up captions in YouTube Live
Use captions embedded in the encoder
- In YouTube’s stream setup, open Setup and enable Closed captions.
- Choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the stream. Check that captions are synchronized and legible during a test broadcast.
YouTube’s live-caption page lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net. These are tools YouTube lists for caption support; the listing does not establish that every option is appropriate for continuous sung kirtan or that listed versions remain current.
Use a caption ingestion feed
- Turn on captions for the YouTube live event and copy its signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Configure a captioner or supported caption software to send its feed to that URL.
- Keep the system clock accurate and test synchronization before the stream is relied on.
- Account for the 30- or 60-second broadcast delay described in YouTube’s event instructions, and confirm it works for the particular continuous-stream setup.
The feed needs to cover the actual hours the channel is live. YouTube’s documentation explains the connection method but does not establish provider availability, language coverage, lyric accuracy, or 24/7 staffing. Ask any prospective caption provider specifically about the target language, sung lyrics, prepared or reviewed text, continuous coverage, YouTube ingestion support, and acceptable delay before relying on it.

When automatic captions may help—and when they may not
To enable YouTube live automatic captions, open Go live, choose Stream, turn on Closed captions, select Automatic captions, then select the video language. YouTube describes this feature as gradually available to eligible English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. It is configured per stream rather than at channel level; check YouTube’s current live automatic caption instructions for availability.
Kirtan is singing, so YouTube’s general warnings about music, unsupported languages, poor sound, and overlapping voices matter. Its documentation does not establish caption accuracy for sung kirtan lyrics. YouTube cautions: “Automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.” Test a representative passage that includes the real language, singers, instruments, and mix. If accurate lyrics are important, use prepared or human-reviewed captions rather than treating automatic recognition as verified text.

- Automatic captions may not appear on low- or ultra-low-latency streams.
- Accents, dialects, mispronunciation, background noise, poor sound, unsupported language, long silence, long or complex audio, and overlapping voices can affect recognition.
- Availability may depend on channel eligibility and YouTube’s rollout; do not assume a continuous schedule will receive captions automatically.
Caption the archive separately
Live automatic captions do not stay on the finished video. YouTube may generate new captions for the VOD, and those captions can differ from the live captions. For an existing or archived video, YouTube Studio supports uploading a timed caption file, synchronizing a transcript in the same language, or typing captions manually. Use YouTube’s Add subtitles & captions instructions for the current Studio workflow.

Test the whole caption path before relying on it
- Listen and read along during a representative passage, including the quietest and busiest musical sections.
- Check that lyrics appear in the intended language and stay synchronized with singing.
- Confirm captions remain available through a stream reconnect or other routine change in the broadcast workflow.
- Verify that the intended caption method is present in the finished archive; live automatic captions are not retained as the live caption track.
- Have a fallback plan if the caption feed stops or automatic captions are unavailable.
